Future Plans for WCSD

  • Future Plans

As Washoe County School District (WCSD continues our long-term facilities work, we will use the Facility Modernization Plan (FMP) to guide and inform facility use and capital investment decisions over the next fifteen years. Our work will ensure that every student in our district grows and thrives in the best possible learning environment. This follows the WCSD Promise: We will know every student by Name, Strength and Need so they graduate prepared for the future they choose and we will deliver on this promise in partnership with our Families and Community.

The 2023 FMP outlines a sequence of strategic capital investments that will improve all schools over 15 years within existing budgets without the need for new capital funding sources. It will provide all students and teachers with a safe, comfortable, and inspiring environment to teach and learn in, with enough capacity in each community to accommodate every student. It will provide flexible, fully equipped classrooms that align with WCSD design standards and support best practices in modern, student-centered instruction and learning. And it will accommodate specialized facilities for programs that serve the unique needs of WCSD ‘s most vulnerable populations.

The 2023 FMP also recommended a district study of successful local and national PK-8 schools for potential implementation at WCSD, which could expand family choice and access to new education pathways tailored to the needs of our communities.

As our team engages in this long-term process, we will continue to follow the established protocols of our Capital Funding Protection Committee and WCSD Board of Trustees. Every project includes multiple layers of activities such as planning, design, construction, bidding, permitting and approvals. We will work closely with district leadership, school administration and their staff so that they are fully aware of plans in advance. This support includes messaging for students, families and community members who will be impacted.

Although WCSD is exceptionally fortunate to have a sustainable funding source for capital projects, we do operate in an environment with finite capital resources, the 2023 FMP will allow us to predict and plan for funding requirements for school construction, other facility needs, and staffing needs in this large and complex capital investment program.

As a reminder, every project takes a substantial amount of time to plan and carry out. There will be no surprises whether the project is a school rebuild, school modernization, or a trade-up option.
