Nevada Seal Programs
Overview
Seals represent various accomplishments that are awarded to graduating high school students, such as academic excellence, participation in programs, or proficiency in a particular field of study. All Seals given in Washoe County School District have been authorized by the Nevada State Legislature.
Earned Seals will appear on the high school transcript and designation affixed to the diploma.
Seal of Biliteracy
- Authorized by the 2015 legislature (AB 166) - NRS 388.591 / 388.593
- The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a district in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. The Seal of Biliteracy encourages students to pursue biliteracy, honors the skills students attain, and can be evidence of skills that are attractive to future employers and college admissions offices.
- Criteria
- Complete 4 years (4 credits) of English Language Arts with at least a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
- Successfully pass all assessments required for graduation according to Nevada State Law.
- Demonstrate proficiency in one or more approved world language(s) other than English through an approved assessment.
- Proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and listening
Seal of Civics
- Authorized by the 2021 legislature (SB 194) - NRS 388.5933 / NRS 388.5935
- Criteria
- Earn at least a 3.25 grade point average, on a 4.0 scale or a 3.85 weighted grade point average.
- Earns at least three credits in social studies; and
- Three credits could include civics, criminal justice, contemporary problems, economics, financial literacy, geography, macroeconomics, microeconomics, US government, US history, and/or world history.
- Earns a score of at least 90% on the examination for civics required pursuant to NRS 389.009; and
- Can retake one time only for a higher score.
- Earns a satisfactory score in citizenship on the NDE provided rubric (a B or better in WCSD social studies courses)
- Completes a service-learning project
Seal of Financial Literacy
- Authorized by the 2019 legislature (SB 314) - NRS 388.596 / 388.5962
- Criteria
- Earn at least a 3.25 grade point average, on a 4.0 scale or a 3.85 weighted grade point average.
- Earns at least three credits in a subject area in which financial literacy is provided; and
- Earn one of the following:
- Earn a score of 85% on a Financial Literacy Assessment provided by the Nevada Department of Education
- A grade of B or higher in a college level course in which instruction in financial literacy is provided; or
- Earn a score of gold or higher on the ACT National Career Readiness Certificate
Seal of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
- Authorized by the 2017 legislature (SB 241) - NRS 388.594 / 388.5945
- Criteria
- Earn at least a 3.25 grade point average, on a 4.0 scale or a 3.85 weighted grade point average.
- Demonstrate proficiency in science, technology, engineering and mathematics by earning:
- At least four credits in science and demonstrate proficiency on an approved assessment; and
- At least four credits in mathematics and demonstrate proficiency on an approved assessment; and
- At least one credit in computer science, engineering, manufacturing, electronics or a career and technical education (CTE) program of study in information and media technologies or skilled and technical sciences.
- CTE programs: Advanced Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Digital Game Development, Information Technology Networking, Web Design, Fashion, Textiles, and Design, Graphic Design, Multimedia Communications, Radio Production, Theatre Technology, Video Production, Building Trades in Construction Technology, Design Drafting, Heating, Venilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR), Advanced Manufacturing Technologies, Electronic Technology, Industrial Maintence, Metalworking, Welding Technology, Energy Technologies, Engineering Foundations, Automotive Technology, Aviation Maintenence Technician, Aviation Technology, or Diesel Technology

- Authorized by the 2017 legislature (SB 241) - NRS 388.597 / 388.5975
- Criteria
- Earn at least a 3.25 grade point average, on a 4.0 scale or a 3.85 weighted grade point average.
- Demonstrate proficiency in science, technology, engineering and mathematics by earning:
- At least three credits in science and demonstrate proficiency on an approved assessment; and
- At least four credits in mathematics and demonstrate proficiency on an approved assessment; and
- At least one credit in computer science, engineering, manufacturing, electronics or a career and technical education (CTE) program of study in information and media technologies or skilled and technical sciences.
