Return to Play Concussion Protocol
-
Each student with a concussion must undergo a supervised stepwise progression management plan. It is advised that a medical professional supervise the program.
Exertional Testing:
Determination to begin the Return to Play progression is done by a physician, WCSD approved MoU Provider, and the Athletic Trainer. This occurs when the athlete’s physical exam has normalized. The athlete returns to a full day of school without symptoms. ImPACT, Tandem Gait, and VOMS testing have approximated the athletes baseline. The Return to Play Protocol has five stages.
Return to Play Protocol:
Stage 1
After an initial short rest period of 24–48 hours, light cognitive and physical activity can begin.
As long as these do not worsen symptoms. Daily activities like moving around the house, simple chores and re-introducing school and work activities at home.
Stage 2
Light aerobic activity (walking or stationary cycling) for 10–15 minutes. Increase duration and intensity gradually over time if symptoms do not worsen and no new symptoms occur after exercise
or in the following hours. No resistance training or other heavy lifting.
Stage 3
Individual sport-specific exercise, no contact. Skating, running, throwing for 20–30 minutes.
No body contact or jarring motions like high-speed stops or batting. No resistance training.
Stage 4
Non-contact training drills. No impact activities. Add in progressive resistance training.
Stage 5
Once cleared by a healthcare provider:
Full contact practice and normal practice activities.
Stage 6
Full game or competition.
