Patricia Jennings, "The Trauma Sensitive Classroom"

Tish Jennings, author of the “Trauma Sensitive Classrooms”,  provided an opening talk helping us to build a shared understanding of trauma, our responses to it, and how it affects student learning. She described ways in which the environment can be shaped to foster safety and belongingness, setting the conditions for student learning. She addressed the concept of secondary trauma and the critical importance of the trauma sensitive environment, not just for the benefit of students but critical for the adults responsible for educating our children
