    This page was created to keep our community informed during the process of finding the next Superintendent of Schools for the Washoe County School District (WCSD) and to ensure that opportunities for community input are available to all stakeholders.

    As part of the search process, on January 9, 2024 the Board of Trustees approved the official job description.  Washoe County School District - Meeting Information (diligent.community)

    The search process is anticipated to take several months, with the goal of selecting a new superintendent by mid-May 2024. The new superintendent will start on July 1, 2024.

Finalists

  • After an extensive national search, five individuals have been identified as finalists to be considered to serve as the Superintendent of Schools for the Washoe County School District.  Click on the finalist name to learn more about them.

  •   Christopher S. Bernier, Ed.D.

    Christopher S. Bernier, Ed.D.

    Dr. Bernier most recently served as Superintendent of the Lee County School District in Ft. Myers, Florida. He previously served as the Chief of Staff in the Clark County (Nevada) School District from 2019-2022. Dr. Bernier served the Orange County School District in Orlando, Florida, for 32 years as Associate Superintendent of Schools, Senior Director of Professional Development, High School Principal, Middle School Principal, Dean of Students, Athletic Director, and US History Teacher.

    Joseph M. Ernst, M.Ed.

    Mr. Ernst currently serves as the Chief Continuous Improvement Officer for the Washoe County School District, a position he has held since 2021.  Before his current role, he served WCSD since 1996 as a Co-Lead Area Superintendent, Elementary School Principal, Assistant Principal, and Elementary School Teacher.  Prior to working in WCSD Mr. Ernst taught elementary school in Michigan.

    Dr. Fagen has been the Superintendent of Humble (Texas) Independent School District since 2016. She previously served as superintendent of the Douglas County School District in Colorado and Tucson Unified School District. Dr. Fagen began her career in Iowa as a High School Science Teacher and also served as a Junior High Administrator, High School Principal, and later Executive Director and Associate Superintendent for the Des Moines Independent School District.

    Dr. McNulty has been Superintendent of the Pulaski County School District in Little Rock, Arkansas, since 2018. He previously served as Superintendent for the School District of Black Hawk in Wisconsin and as Associate Superintendent in Waterloo, Iowa. Community School District. Dr. McNulty’s education career also includes working as a Special Education Teacher, Principal, Director of Personnel, and College Professor and Faculty Member.

    Troy R. Parks, Ed.D.

    Dr. Parks has been the Chief Academic Officer of Washoe County School District since 2020. He began his career at WCSD as an elementary school teacher in 1997. Since then, Dr. Parks has served as Dean of Students, Math Coordinator, Principal, School Performance Director, Area Superintendent, and Lead Area Superintendent. Before a career in public education, Dr. Parks held positions in the insurance industry and also was employed as a steelworker.

  • The five finalists will meet with Trustees and engage in interviews during a series of events from April 24-26. The public is invited to meet the finalists at an event at Wooster High School on Thursday, April 25 from 5 to 8:15 p.m. Community members, families, students, members of the media and WCSD employees and leaders will have an opportunity to ask questions of the candidates at the event. The community room at the event will be live-streamed and questions can be submitted in advance (deadline: 5 p.m. on April 24) via email at WCSD_Communications@WashoeSchools.net

Stakeholder Report

  • Download a copy of the Stakeholder Summary Feedback Report
    The report includes a summary of responses from online survey submissions gathered from WCSD Stakeholders between February 8 and February 26, 2024, and a summary of one-on-one conversations with members of the WCSD Executive Leadership Team (ELT).   In total, 545 online survey responses were received and nine (9) ELT members participated in scheduled individual conversations. McPherson & Jacobson, LLC research and data collection partner K12 Insight managed the survey platform, data collection, and provided initial item analysis.
