WCSD Students Celebrate Bike Month
With Obstacle Course, Safety Lessons
Reno, NV (May 9, 2025) — Students in the Washoe County School District (WCSD) will celebrate Bike Month by participating in safety lessons, bicycle parades, obstacle courses, and much more. Twenty-five events are planned at schools across the district, and more than 2,000 students will take part.
“We are excited to invite our students and staff members to participate in this year’s Bike Month events,” said Jennifer Iveson, coordinator for Safe Routes to School. “We want these events to be fun, but to also carry a strong message about the importance of bike helmets, learning the rules of the road, and following those rules every time they’re riding their bikes. We encourage them to ride safely.”
“The weather is warmer and we know our students of all ages love to be outside,” said WCSD School Police Chief Tracy Moore. “Throughout the school year, we make every effort to teach them how to stay safe both at school and at home, and this is part of that message. Our officers look forward to Bike Month each year, and we enjoy participating in the events with our students and staff members.”
Among the activities during this year’s observance include:
- Obstacle courses
- Bike to School events
- Bike Buses, organized rides to school where students can join at any point along the route with adult supervision
- Helmet Blitzes, where students are provided and fitted with free helmets if they don’t have one
- Bike Parades before school
- Tour de Slurpee, a bike trip from Cold Springs Middle School to a nearby 7-11 for a free Slurpee
- Bike Raffles
