WCSD Celebrates "Topping Off" Ceremony at
Debbie Smith CTE Academy
The Washoe County School District (WCSD) celebrated the “topping off” ceremony at Debbie Smith CTE Academy, as future students signed the final beam that was placed by a crane at the top of the school that is still under construction.
The state-of-the-art school will open its doors to some 700 students in August, 2025 and is the second CTE (Career & Technical Education) high school in the district.
The school design includes several buildings from the original Procter R. Hug High School, located at North McCarran Boulevard and Sutro. Other buildings were demolished to make room for the new main school building on this campus.
Highlights of the new school include:
- A state-of-the-art teaching and learning facility which includes 40 teaching stations, spaces for CTE Academies, and space for high school athletics.
- A comprehensive high school that includes CTE programming.
The CTE Academies are: Culinary Arts with Hospitality and Tourism
- Engineering & Manufacturing
- Marketing and Multimedia
- BioMedical, Practical Nursing and Nursing Assistant
- Natural Resources & Animal Sciences
- Welding and Metalworking
- Building Construction and Technology
- Teaching & Training
Construction on the new school began in November 2022. RiSE Academy for Adult Achievement will also move to the site and will occupy its own building on the campus.
