    How Tutoring Helps

    By WCSD Volunteers

    For the Learner

    • Creates a more favorable atmosphere for learning (particularly through the use of one-on-one instruction).
    • Provides more time on task, increased opportunities to read and immediate feedback.
    • Allows for immediate, positive and corrective feedback to help the learner stay on track and not repeat errors.
    • Can increase reading performance.
    • Can improve motivation and decrease frustration.
    • Enhances interpersonal skills as a bond is established with the tutor.
    • Allows for individual monitoring of progress to ensure that learning is taking place.

    For the Tutor

    • Establishes important skills such as patience, trustworthiness and responsibility.
    • Provides an opportunity for community service.
    • Enhances interpersonal skills.
    • Increases the tutor's own reading performance as a result of tutoring.

    Elementary Schools

    Description: Math tutors to play math games with students, ages are kindergarten thru third grade. Request is for elementary students struggling in math.
     
    Requirements: Hours are days, M-F and volunteers must commit to 2 hours a week at a regular day and time for at least 1 semester. Must enjoy math and working with elementary age children, attend the live or do the “on line” Math Paths 2 hour training, pass WCSD screening and background check, sign a confidentiality form and be able to be flexible and adapt to a school environment. Tutors bilingual in Spanish are welcomed!
     
     
    Description: Literacy tutors to read to students, ages are kindergarten thru sixth grade. Request is for elementary students struggling in reading.

    Requirements: Hours are days, M-F and volunteers must commit to a minimum of 2 hours a week at a regular day and time for at least 1 semester. Must enjoy reading and working with elementary age children, attend the live or do the “on line” Read & Succeed 2 hour training, pass WCSD screening and background check, sign a confidentiality form and be able to be flexible and adapt to a school environment. Tutors bilingual in Spanish are welcomed! 

     
    “Safe Routes to Schools” Volunteers
    Description: Request is for volunteers who care about child obesity, decreased vehicle emissions, reduced traffic congestion, promoting healthy living, and keeping children safe from strangers/dangers on their way to and from school. Volunteers are asked to join a walking/biking group that guides students to schools.
     
    Requirements: Hours are days, M-F morning and/or afternoon; schedules vary with school start and end times. Volunteers must have the ability to be trained by school staff, walk or bike 1-3 miles, pass WCSD screening and background check and sign a confidentiality form.  
     
    Writing Tutors
    Description: Request is for elementary students struggling in reading. Writing tutors work helping with writing skills as directed by the classroom teacher.
     
    Requirements: Hours are days, M-F and volunteers must commit to a minimum of 2 hours a week at a regular day and time for at least 1 semester. Must enjoy writing and working with elementary age children. Volunteers must pass WCSD screening and background check, sign a confidentiality form and be able to be flexible and adapt to a school environment. Tutors bilingual in Spanish are welcomed!
      
     
    Kindergarten Helpers
    Description: Request is for gentle, patient and energetic kindergarten helpers in our large kindergarten classes to help with reading, math, computer-work, etc.
    Requirements: Hours are days, M-F and volunteers must commit to a minimum of 2-4 hours a week at a regular day and time for at least 1 semester. Must enjoy working with kindergarten age children, have the ability to move easily and quickly around small children, attend a live or “on line” kindergarten training, pass WCSD screening and background check, sign a confidentiality form and be able to be flexible and adapt to a school environment. Helpers bilingual in Spanish are welcomed!
     
     
    Coaches
    Description: Request is for a volunteer that knows about coaching sports.
     
    Requirements: Exact hours are TBD, schedule is days, M-F volunteers must commit a specific time each week for at least 1 semester. Must enjoy working with children, know soccer, pass WCSD screening and background check, sign a confidentiality form and be able to be flexible and adapt to a school environment. Coaches bilingual in Spanish are welcomed!
     
     
    Early Childhood/Teen Mom Teacher Helpers
    Description: Request is for a volunteer to the Early Childhood (under 5) teacher with her class.
     
    Requirements: Hours are days, M-F and volunteers must commit to a minimum of 2-4 hours a week at a regular day and time for at least 1 semester. Must enjoy working with young children, have the ability to move easily and quickly around small children, attend a live or “on line” early Childhood orientation, pass WCSD screening and background check, sign a confidentiality form and be able to be flexible and adapt to a school environment. Helpers bilingual in Spanish are welcomed!

    Tutors for Math and Other Subjects 
    Description: Request is for middle and high students struggling in math and other high school subjects. 

    Requirements: Hours are days, M-F and volunteers must commit to 2 hours a week at a regular day and time for at least 1 semester. Must be capable of performing high school level subjects, enjoy working with teenage students, pass WCSD screening and background check, sign a confidentiality form and be able to be flexible and adapt to a school environment. Tutors bilingual in Spanish are welcomed!

     
    Description: AVID is a college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges. Although AVID serves all students, it focuses on the least served students in the academic middle.

    Requirements: Hours are days, M-F and volunteers must commit to 2 hours a week at a regular day and time for at least 1 semester. Must be capable of performing high school level subjects, enjoy working with teenage students, pass WCSD screening and background check, sign a confidentiality form and be able to be flexible and adapt to a school environment. Tutors bilingual in Spanish are welcomed!

    Library and/or Library Computer Research Helpers 
    Description: Request is for volunteers that are comfortable with books, computers, internet or that would like to learn about libraries and research. We have school libraries that need help keeping their school libraries organized and helping students learn to research through the internet.

    Requirements: Hours are days, M-F and volunteers must commit to 2 hours a week at a regular day and time for at least 1 semester. Volunteers must have the ability to be trained by school staff, lift books and carry over 10 lbs. and if helping with research, must be comfortable with computers and internet research. Volunteers must also pass WCSD screening and background check and sign a confidentiality agreement. 

     

     
    School Office Support for Schools, Departments and Program
    Description: Help bilingual in Spanish is especially needed. Request is for volunteers that are experienced in office work to help where the workload is very heavy and behind.

    Requirements: Hours are days, M-F and volunteers must commit to 4 hours a week at a regular day and time for at least 1 semester. Volunteers must have the ability to be trained by school staff, must have good office skills; computer, telephones, etc.  Volunteer must pass WCSD screening and background check and sign a confidentiality agreement.

     

    Committee Participation
    Description: Request is for community members or parents that are interested in serving on various district committees. Some are monthly, bi annually, even one time. Committees’ may request parents or just anyone in the community with an interest in the committee’s area or who just wants to help. It’s a great opportunity to be involved in education. We put you on a list that is made available to those employees needing to invite someone from the community to participate on a committee. You would be contacted to determine if you are interested and able to participate.

    Requirements: Hours can be day or evening, usually M-F. Volunteers must have the ability to travel and attend meeting/s on a schedule, communicate in a group setting, pass WCSD screening and background check and sign a confidentiality agreement. Volunteers may be contacted with short notice, but there is no obligation if the committee schedule is not workable for the volunteer.
