    Students

Students from 4 different schools in Washoe County presented on Student Voice at a National CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) convention held in Sacramento on April 11th and 12th. They talked about our annual Strength in Voices Conference, school-level data summits, and the importance of working WITH students towards school improvement. They were also fortunate enough to participate in several Social Emotional Learning and Student Voice activities throughout the 2-day conference. We are so grateful to CASEL and to WCSD for this opportunity.

  • Student Voice Ambassadors Provide Student Perspective at WCSD Annual Data Summit

"Us students make the data come alive!

    Without us, it's just numbers"

    -WCSD Student Voice Ambassador

Student Voice Ambassadors provide youth perspective during annual WCSD Data Summit.

Student Voice Ambassadors from around WCSD attended the Data Summit to provide student perspectives on school issues, including topics such as chronic absenteeism, school climate, equity, achievement gaps, and college readiness. They served as Ushers, providing a warm welcome to attendees and helping to get everyone registered and seated. We even had several students up on stage telling their stories!

The students were excited to be able to be a part of this event. When looking at data around school climate, one Student Ambassador said, "people look at this!?" She was excited that conversations were taking place around the feedback students provided and schools were taking action accordingly.

It is important that when we hold adult conversations about our students, we remember to include them every chance we get!

"Family isn't an important thing, it's EVERYTHING!"

Students Present at Nevada Family Engagement Summit

Middle and high school students from 7 different schools represented Washoe County School District on Saturday, October 22 as they presented a session they prepared to facilitate honest discussions on the topic of family engagement. Students used the Fishbowl activity to share their own personal experiences of how schools have engaged their families in their education then they opened it up for audience members to share experiences, ask questions, and help identify ways to increase family engagement in our schools.

  • 2017-18 Student Advisory Council

    2017-18 Student Advisory Council

Thank you to our WCSD students who served on the Student Advisory Council (SAC) during the 2017-18 school year. The SAC members partnered with the Department of Accountability to put on yet another successful Strength in Voices conference. These students also served as leaders in their own schools, using their voices for positive change.  We are inspired by their commitment to WCSD! As we say goodbye to our senior members, we wish them the best in the next chapter of their lives.

Elementary school students attend Strength in Voices Conference

For the first time ever, students from WCSD elementary schools attended the Strength in Voices conference! Students attended breakout sessions facilitated by other students focusing on topics of leadership and student voice in schools and communities. We had fun making paper airplanes, cootie catchers, and artwork to express and share our ideas.
