    The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees have adopted Board Policy 1310 - Political Activity in Schools as a guiding document for official interaction with elected officials.  Administrative Regulation 1310 provides further details about political activity within the Washoe County School District.  If there are additional questions, send an email for more information. 

    Washoe County School District Government Affairs Overview

    Federal

    According to the U.S. Department of Education, education is primarily a state and local responsibility.  The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is the overarching federal law governing K-12 education and was signed in December of 2015.  ESSA replaced the No Child Left Behind Act which was enacted in 2002.  The federal financial contribution to education nationally is approximately 8%.  Washoe County School District works with national education advocacy organizations like AASA to address the needs of all WCSD students.

    Nevada Legislature

    While governed primarily by the school board of trustees, financial resources are largely distributed by the Nevada Legislature.  The Nevada Legislature meets in odd years for 120 days.

    State Board of Education

    The State Board of Education is composed of eleven members. Four members are elected from the four congressional districts in Nevada, and seven members are appointed.  In general, they develop state-level regulations and programs staffed by the Nevada Department of Education led by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

    While local governments don't have direct authority over the Washoe County School Board, we work with our local government partners on a variety of issues including community relations, social services, before/after school programs, school safety, zoning, and school construction.
