Important Information

    • As we end the year, we are seeing lots of students without necessary supplies such as pencils to last the final three weeks.  Will you please make sure your students have enough pencils and whatever other supplies needed for classes?  And, if you have extra pencils you are not using at home, we would be happy to take them off your hands so there are extras in classrooms for students who forget.  Thank you!
    • 8th grade Graduation – a separate email was sent last week to all 8th grade families with details about the celebration.  I will also send the same email once weekly until the event.
    • As we near the end of our 24/25 school year, we have lots of fun events planned.  Our Shaw end-of-year events include our Carnival, Field Day, 8th grade “Donuts with Friends” Celebration, all-school Talent Show, and our 8th grade graduation.  As always, students who do not meet expected Coyote behavior and are assigned a suspension as a result will not be eligible to attend our end-of-year events.  Please speak to your students at home to help them make good choices so that they can join us for end-of-year fun and celebration. Thank you for your partnership.
    • Spring weather is here (sort of – it is Nevada so it’s a day-to-day thing).  Please help us on two fronts with students who understandably have a little spring fever.  First, please check that your student is walking out the door with appropriate clothes that meet our WCSD/Shaw dress code.  This includes our body is covered from chest to thigh, all shirts have straps, and no undergarments (bras, boxer shorts etc) are intentionally showing.  Secondly, please remind students that NO WATER GUNS are allowed at school at any time.  This can become a serious safety issue as water pistols/guns are often mistaken for real weapons. Thank you for helping us at home to keep Shaw a safe and welcoming environment.
    • Important – As part of the worst of social media’s effects, there are currently numerous Tik Tok and other social media trends encouraging students everywhere to intentionally damage school property. These trends encourage damage to laptops, electrical outlets, and other school property.  These trends attempt to challenge students to behave in a way that is not only unacceptable, but very dangerous. Please speak openly to your students about expected behavior as well as the serious consequences of students damaging school property – including safety impact for all, suspension, loss of privilege, liability for cost of repair, and possible criminal charges.
    • May is Mental Health Awareness Month! This month at Shaw, the counseling department will be opening up conversations surrounding mental health awareness/acceptance through morning announcements, and weekly activities that promote healthy coping skills. Please see the attachment with ideas of how to open the conversation and support your child.  This month we have an opportunity to break the stigma around mental health by talking openly, compassionately, and kindly to each other. No one should ever struggle alone.

    • Cell Phone Policy: As you have heard in multiple communications from the district, the WCSD cell phone policy has been updated.  In order for students to focus on learning throughout the day, cell phones at all schools must be away for the day. Shaw has always been an “Away for the Day” school, but we have updated our policy and expectations. One key change is that students are required to put their cell phone in a backpack as cell phones may not be kept in a pocket or on a student’s body during the school dayAt Shaw, students may continue to use their cell phones during their lunchtime, but we may need to reconsider this privilege if this prevents students from truly keeping their focus off cell phones/social media etc. during the learning parts of the day.  We will continue to monitor and communicate regarding this lunchtime privilege. The attached Administrative Regulation 5810 outlines the increased disciplinary outcomes for students who violate this policy as well as actions taken when students violate the policy.  In addition, information about this districtwide policy can be found here: Phone Away and Learn Today / Phone Away and Learn Today.  Students will be taught the policy expectations tomorrow and throughout this week.
    • Homework Club: HOMEWORK CLUB ENDS ON MAY 29TH: Students may come to our Math-focused homework club in Room 320 or all-other-content area homework club in the library. Students may work on homework and if they need help, there is a certified teacher available. The hours are 2:00 - 3:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Students must remain in the session for the full time unless the student shows us a text or call from you indicating that the student may leave early
