Maternity Leave Info

Introduction

  • Dear Parents,

Hello and welcome to a new school year! I wanted to write and introduce myself. My name is Kayla Craig, and I am your child’s new case manager.  I know that the transition from 6th to 7th grade can be a big adjustment, but together we will get through it every step of the way!

In case you want to know a little about my background... I grew up in the Bay Area, California.  I graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno for my Bachelors of Science Degree in general and Special Education in 2016.  From there I had three internships all working in three completely different school settings and situations. I taught my first three years at Shaw Middle School and I enjoyed every bit of my time there!  Now, I have the honor of being a part of Sky Ranch Middle School and teaching your new teenager!

In my classroom, we work hard to accomplish our IEP goals and objectives. I see some of my students in SSTS specifically, this is where we will be hitting the English content, they see in their general education class; while we work on remediating skills they still struggle with. If I do not see them for SSTS, I will see them in their general education English class where I co-teach with either Mrs. Guido or Mrs. Wallace. If your child has me for Basic English, I am their English teacher! We focus on grade level content at a much slower pace than the general education classes!

Maternity Leave Information

  •

The start of this year is going to look a little bit different for me. I will be starting the year off on maternity leave and will return to school after Christmas break.  I have provided some helpful information about my classes while I am gone.

    1. Miss Bonvissuto will be teaching Basic English with my long-term sub. We have worked together for the last two years and she runs the classroom the same way I do. We have planned and created all expectations and lessons together.
    2. There will be a long-term sub, Karessa Battenfeld, in my position for the time I am out. She is currently working on her special education degree and has worked at Sky Ranch in our CLS classes for the last two years. She will do her best to help the class function as close to normal as possible. Please encourage your student to be positive and welcoming towards her.
    3. Please know majority of instruction will be student centered during my leave. This means students will be required to work independently or with a partner on assignments every day. ALL the direct instruction (like notes) will be given through Miss Bonvissuto, the sub, and/or videos we have created. Because of how we structured the lessons/units, students will receive the same instruction and information as if I were still in the classroom.
    4. Student behavior will be the biggest factor in their success during this time. Please encourage your student to be a productive member of the classroom.

I know it can be hard to start the new year with a substitute teacher and have to adjust to a different teacher in the middle of the year, but I have full confidence all students will be successful and polite young adults during this time. Thank you for your support and understanding.  I am looking forward to a great 7th grade year working with your student and your family!
