New Student Orientation Information

    Students beginning classes in the fall semester (August) must attend a single-day orientation session held in June or July. Orientation is required for all first-year students and optional but strongly encouraged for all new transfer students.

    All orientations consist of three parts:

    1. A pre-orientation, web-based program to be completed prior to attending orientation. Login information will be sent via email.
    2. In-person, on campus orientation day.
    3. Academic Advising takes place the week following orientation. While attending orientation, students make a virtual appointment to meet with their academic advisor.

     

    First-year student orientation program

    First-Year Student Orientation: This single-day program focuses on preparing students for the basics of being a college student. Students will participate in workshops and presentations on academic advising, college life and getting involved. All Orientation dates include a simultaneous family program.

    Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. with optional pre-program activities 8:30-9:50 a.m.
    The Orientation program will run 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
    Optional campus tours will be offered 5-6:15 p.m.
    A light breakfast, full lunch and afternoon snack will be provided for both students and registered guests.

    Virtual Orientation options are available for students with extenuating circumstances that prevent them from attending any in-person orientation session. If you would like information about our virtual options, please email us at orientation@unr.edu. A member of our team will contact you to discuss options as appropriate.

    The CCAMPIS grant is designed to support income-qualified parents enrolled in post-secondary education through the provision of quality, affordable and accessible campus-based child care and other academic services to assist with degree attainment.

    First in the Pack

    Nevada First in the Pack is a program designed to help first-generation and/or Nevada Guarantee college students obtain a college degree. First in the Pack's mission is to develop the necessary agency in first-generation and income-qualified (receive the Nevada Guarantee) students to meet their academic, social, and career goals. For First in the Pack, first-generation students are students in families where neither parent has graduated from a four-year college or university in the United States. You do NOT need to have U.S. citizenship to be eligible for First in the Pack.

    Fostering the Pack

    Fostering the Pack is a program designed to help college students who have experienced foster care through the state of Nevada after the age of 13 and are under 26 obtain a college degree. Fostering the Pack's mission is to develop the necessary agency in students who have experienced foster care and receive the former foster youth fee waiver to meet their academic, social, and career goals.

    McNair Scholars provides research opportunities and other related academic experiences that promote the acquisition of the doctoral degree for first generation, low-income, and underrepresented University of Nevada, Reno juniors and seniors.

    Upward Bound Classic & Upward Bound Math + Science

    Upward Bound supports first-generation, income-qualified students at eight target high schools with free college prep services, fostering skills for successful postsecondary education. UBMS focuses on math and science to promote pursuing degrees in those fields.

    Emanating from the struggles and achievements of the Civil Right Movement and President Lyndon Johnson’s “unconditional war on poverty,” our programs have the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion at the core. All programs under the administration of the First-Generation Student Center strive to provide access and opportunities to minoritized populations in higher education.
