    STUDENT CLASSROOM PLACEMENT 25-26 SY:

As the school year ends and our teachers complete student placement, I want to share information about how we place students. There are always questions concerning how students are assigned to classrooms for the upcoming school year. When classrooms are formed, many things are considered. The State of Nevada regulates student-to-teacher ratios, and a recent change to legislative requirements includes student achievement on standardized testing as part of those considerations. Additionally, educational research indicates that children perform better in balanced classrooms. A balanced classroom has, as closely as possible, an equal number of genders and a balanced number of children who perform at all academic levels. This allows for equitable ability grouping. Therefore, our classrooms will have a mix of students with Special Education services, English Language Learner support, Gifted and Talented distinctions, and many other differences that make every one of our learners at Hunsberger unique.

How do we determine your child’s abilities and needs? With all the evaluative testing schools are required to do, your child’s ability and meeting their instructional needs is paramount to a successful education. With iReady, Measure of Academic Performance (MAP) testing, the Nevada State Criterion Reference Test (SBAC), and the baseline test that measures grade level performance. In addition, the previous year's teachers provided feedback on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) factors to consider while placing each student in the next grade level.

My goal is to ensure all the classrooms are as balanced as possible to meet the needs of all students within our school. In addition, a vital aspect of my role as Principal is to guarantee equitable and high-quality instructional practices in all teachers’ classrooms. Based on all the above factors and my core beliefs about what is best for students and the school community, parent requests for teachers will not be taken. I appreciate your understanding in this matter.

    KIDS HELPING KIDS FUNDRAISER

Are you wondering what to do with your child's backpack, lunchbox, pencil holder, or gently used school supplies at the end of the school year?  Kids Helping Kids is an organization which collects donated school items to help local students in need.  We will be collecting these items up until the last day of school.  The yellow bins will be out by drop off/pick up as well as another yellow bin by the entrance/exit doors to the building.  Our goal at Hunsberger is to collect 200 backpacks!!!  Please help us reach our goal and meet the needs of students in our WCSD community!

Thank you from the Husky Leaders

    MUSIC PERFORMANCES:

We are excited to announce a new schedule for our student music programs, which will now take place from 2:30-3:30 pm.  I understand this is a change from previous years, but it allows us to better support all students in showcasing their musical talents.  It will also help us accommodate families more conveniently while ensuring students have ample time to prepare and perform.  We are confident that this adjustment will create a more inclusive and enjoyable experience for everyone involved, and we appreciate your understanding and flexibility with this change.  Please see the Music Program dates below:

    HUNSBERGER HEROES:

We are continuing our long-standing tradition of Hunsberger Heroes. Becoming a Hunsberger Hero is easy. There are no cookies, wrapping paper or coupon books to sell. Families simply make a monetary contribution to the school, all of which directly supplement the cost of technology maintenance, supplemental texts, intervention support, student recognition, social/emotional learning, and much more (up to 10% of funds received may be used for staff recognition).  All contributions are tax-deductible (Federal Tax ID #88-6000-919).  So, join us in this “no-fundraiser-fundraiser" by sending your check to the school or in the mail (2505 Crossbow Ct. Reno, NV 89511).

    We greatly appreciate your support!

    COUNSELOR CORNER:

    Hello Husky Families,

As we near the end of the school year, I have a suggestion for a summer read just for parents.  It is the book, The Anxious Generation, by Jonathan Haidt. This book describes the effects of social media and technology on our youth.

The Washoe County School District policy on phones is now "phone away, learn today" to promote a focused learning environment.  Students are not allowed to use phones in class (during learning times) unless it is academically appropriate.  Often, this is not a huge issue in elementary school, however, I know a lot of our students go on social media and play video games for hours.

The Anxious Generation shows data proving the harmfulness that long-term gaming and social media can cause to a person. This includes sleep issues, anger, mood changes, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation.  The amount of time kids spend with their friends has decreased 65% since 2010.  The author suggests that we need to put down electronics and get back to the good ole days of play.  In fact, kids need to have some risky play.  Remember some of the playground equipment we had as kids?  Even the monkey bars are banned at some schools-kids get blisters-but this is a good thing to get a bit hurt, so they LEARN how to not get hurt in the future.

Thank you for being there for your kids, as they are amazing!  I hope you all have a wonderful summer.  I've been so lucky to have spent time with your children. We have incredible students here at Hunsberger and I look forward to the 2025-2026 coming school year!
