A NOTE FROM MRS. LAUF:
Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year!!! We are off to a great start, and students are ready for a fun filled year of learning and growing.
- Some new and existing initiatives that teachers and staff will be focused on this year are: new social studies standards and implementation strategies, Positive Discipline to continue our social emotional work, math instructional practices, students’ goals and celebration of successes, school wide garden theme. Professional development will focus on all of these areas.
- I will continue to raise funds to help support our academic environment through Hunsberger Heroes, and greatly appreciate your generous donatations.
- Please continue to be mindful of our safety policies and procedures. Parent pick up and drop off consists of an inner and an outer lane for stopping, but not parking, and the middle lane for moving traffic. If you would like to park your vehicle and walk in to pick up or drop off your student please park in a designated parking spot and use the crosswalk to the sidewalk. The front lot is closed for bus loading and unloading.
- Please make after school arrangements before school with your child. Our office often gets inundated with messages to deliver to students, and this should be reserved for emergencies only.
- The start of the new year is a great time to ensure that your students' name is clearly marked on lunchboxes, water bottles, jackets and sweatshirts. This will help ensure that items are returned if lost.
Your Hunsberger PTA is in full swing, planning fun events for the year! We are excited to focus on fun, family events for everyone to enjoy this year.
As most of you have heard, we have changed our fundraising strategy and are asking for $100 donation per student. This money creates so many educational and fun opportunities for the children at our school. Your contribution is tax deductible, includes your PTA membership fee, get’s you the new school events calendar and discounts to our upcoming events. It also provides monthly art classes to every student, updated technology, kindness crew and so much more. Please make your donation by October 5 online at https://hunsbergerpta.mycheddarup.com or by filling out the membership form in the office and paying with check or cash. We appreciate each and every donation!
Want to join the PTA? We have all kinds of fun volunteer opportunities, big and small. Join us at our first meeting on August 24th at 9:30 in the teacher’s lounge or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our first new event is “Coffee on the Playground.” Parents of 1st and 2nd graders, please join us on September 14th, at 9:10 at the entry to the playground to mingle with other parents from your child’s grade. Bring your favorite mug and we will provide the rest!
Hello Hunsberger Families! My name is Lou Eftimoff and I am your school counselor. I look forward to getting to know your children and will see them each month during classroom guidance lessons. In addition, I do small groups and meet with students individually as needed. I can provide community resources and am available to talk to parents, if you have concerns. I will keep you updated through the newsletter on important information regarding SHARE, Better Safe than Sorry, Gifted and Talented, among other things. Your Hunsberger Elementary staff have also been working hard and attending trainings to promote Social Emotional Learning (SEL). SEL helps children and adults acquire skills to manage emotions, show empathy, achieve goals, maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Here is some great news about SEL “Students who received SEL instruction, gained an average of 11% points on their standardized academic achievement tests”. It’s going to be a great year!

HUNSBERGER HONOR CHOIR:
The Hunsberger Music Department is proud to announce that our Honor Choir will soon begin rehearsals! This is an extra-curricular choir for 4th, 5th and 6th graders, which will rehearse before school on Monday (sopranos),Tuesday (altos), and Wednesday (all choir members) mornings from 8:30 – 9:10. Students may come either Monday or Tuesday the first week, during which they will be placed in the appropriate sections; all students should attend on Wednesday. Rehearsals for this semester will begin on Monday, August 20th, in the music room. The Hunsberger Choir will be under the direction of our music teacher, Ms.Thompson. The purpose of the choir is to give students an additional opportunity outside of the general music classroom to read and perform challenging and fun music, specifically in a choral setting.
Students must not be dropped off earlier than 8:20, as there is no playground supervision until 9:10, and students need to go directly to the music room. If your child is enrolled in Judy’s, they will be dismissed from Judy’s at 8:25 to attend choir rehearsals. PLEASE DROP OFF STUDENTS AT PARENT PICK-UP, NOT IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL, AS IT CREATES TRAFFIC CONGESTION FOR ARRIVING STAFF MEMBERS AND IS A HAZARD TO STUDENT SAFETY.

Don't miss the upcoming Art Orientations for Art Volunteers. There are two currently scheuduled; August 21st and September 11th, from 5:00-6:00 pm in the Art Room. We look forward to seeing you there.
The PTA has begun to sell Husky Attire! Please see the attached order form in the Hunsberger Resources section at the end of this newsletter. Order forms are aso available, along with sample items in the office. You can also order online this year, please go to https://huskyattire.cheddarup.com. All orders are due August 20th, and will be delivered to the classrooms during the week of September 10th. Don't miss your opportunity to order your Husky Attire for the year!
