Welcome to the Hunsberger Health Office
My name is Sarah McCalden, I have been a nurse for 19 years. I enjoyed working with your students last year and I am looking forward to another great school year. Our goal for the Hunsberger Health Office is to keep your child healthy, safe, and in class. Please reach out to me with questions or concerns so we can do our best to help your student.
Health Conditions:
If your student has a medical condition/diagnosis that requires special attention or monitoring at school, please speak with the school nurse. The nurse can be reached by phone (775) 851-7095 or via email: Sarah.McCalden@washoeschools.net
Medication:
If your child is taking prescription medication that needs to be given at school, the parent must transport the medication to the clinic with a doctor’s order and a signed consent form from the parent, (please see attached). The medication must have the pharmacy label on the bottle/box with your child’s name and date of birth, and dosage information. Once all forms are received, we can dispense the mediation from the health office. Consent Request for Medication
Rescue Medications:
If your child has rescue medication such as an inhaler, they do not need a physician’s order to carry it with them. If your child has an allergy and carries an EpiPen, they too can always keep their rescue medication on them, however, they will also need to know how to administer this themselves in an emergency. I would recommend getting a physician’s note and fill out the request for Consent Request for Medication Assistance, so that I can delegate administration to an adult. If you do not get the physician’s note, the medication must be fully administered by the student without assistance.
Diabetes:
If your student has diabetes and needs assistance at school, we will need an MD order for Insulin (Type and dose, and when it should be given. The Parental consent will need to be signed and returned to the school nurse. Parents are responsible for supplying the clinic with snacks and supplies for their students.
Screenings:
Screenings for Hearing and Vision will be done for all 1st and 4th graders as required by state law. A letter will be mailed prior to the date of screening, and you will have the opportunity to opt out of the event. Please sign and send the optout form to the school nurse at least 10 days prior to when the screening is scheduled if you do not want your child to be screened.
Kinder Vaccinations:
Please find attached the following document on Kindergarten vaccinations. Resource for Schools, Vaccinations
