Welcome to Alice Smith Elementary School

Welcome everyone…  We are so excited to begin the 2017-2018 school year.  As our students get settled in and get to know their new teachers and classmates, we want them to remember the importance of hard work, sharing, studying, cooperating, being on-time, and being kind.  We have a lot that we want to help them learn and do, and many activities for students and families this year. Together, let’s make this the best year ever!

Our mission: Alice Smith Elementary School serves a diverse group of student learners, their families, and the greater community. We are committed to delivering engaging, differentiated, high quality instruction through a safe, supportive, nurturing, and respectful environment. To do this we will engage our students and school community with the best 21st Century instructional practices that support social, emotional, and academic achievement. Our students will depart Alice Smith Elementary School able to positively contribute to both local and global communities, on track to be college, career, and life ready with skills to foster a love of life-long learning.

Socio-emotional Learning: Alice Smith promotes a safe, nurturing school environment in which students are taught to resolve differences peacefully. Alice Smith is a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) school, and has established systems of socio-emotional support for students that include explicit behavioral expectations and reinforcement of positive social behavior. These are known as our CARES Expectations. Within these expectations are 5 core values.  They are for our students to show: Cooperation, Accountability, Respect, Excellence and Safety.

Teaching and Learning: Alice Smith students are smart and enthusiastic learners. We provide our students with rigorous 21st century instructional practices and the tools and requisite skills to be successful in their educational journey. We have high expectations for student growth and achievement. Along with these high expectations, we have built supports to assist our students in their learning journey.

Supplementary Programs: We have three resource specialist teachers, two English learner teachers, and two speech teachers to provide services for students with unique needs. For students who have reading difficulties or need a boost there is a variety of intervention people and supports. There is a before and after-school program on-site provided by the city of Reno (Sierra Kids) that includes homework help, enrichment activities, and outdoor activities. There are two counselors to provide counseling both individually and in small groups.

Alice Smith prepares all students to be lifelong learners and respectful, responsible and contributing members of their community and the larger society. To make this happen, all of our students are expected to be engaged in their classroom learning, supportive of both their teacher and classmates, have great attendance, take time to study and complete homework at home daily, read often, and BE KIND to EVERYONE in class, at school, on social media…everywhere.

Together we will ensure that our students are on track to be college, career, and life ready!
