Glenn Duncan Elementary School was established in 1957. Each day, as we serve our students and families, we honor the legacy of a great man, a Nevadan, and advocate for public education.
Glenn Duncan was born on December 2, 1896 in Huntington, Indiana. He was a graduate of Huntington College, Valparaiso University, and The University of Wisconsin. Following graduation, he moved to Nevada and taught at White Pine High School while serving as the head of the English Department. He was selected as president of the Nevada Classroom Teachers Association and the Nevada School Administrators Association. Glenn Duncan was elected superintendent of public instruction in 1950. He fought vigorously for higher salaries for teachers and improved school facilities. He was a leader in the successful battle to put a sales and use tax in effect in Nevada to finance school programs. He was also instrumental in obtaining additional state support for schools and increased per pupil funding. He also worked to increase funding for kindergartens and students with special needs. While he was in office, he received state support for ½ of the total costs for school transportation. He was active in the American Legion and Carson City Lions Club. Glenn Duncan died Wednesday, June 27th, 1956 at his home.
Mr. Duncan was noted for his honesty, forthrightness, and courage in promoting education.
“Nevada has lost a most capable state superintendent of schools. He was a man who was greatly responsible in building up the schools of Nevada. He was a close personal friend of mine for the past 27 years. I feel both personally, and for the state, we have suffered a great loss”. – Governor Charles Russel
