Welcome to the Office of School Performance

Vision

The Office of School Performance exists to ensure all WCSD schools attain the highest standards of educational excellence. As a result, all Washoe County School District (WCSD) schools will demonstrate substantive annual progress with all served student groups.  As students transition to new schools and experiences, either within the PreK-12 system or as they matriculate from the system, they will demonstrate readiness for the academic and life challenges ahead of them.

Mission Statement

The day to day mission of the Office of School Performance and our Options Area departments is to support and supervise all WCSD schools to ensure that the learning and social emotional needs of each student are being met.  This includes support for students, teachers, principals, all staff, and families. It further requires strong advocacy on behalf of our schools and in turn holding each of our principals and department leaders accountable to high professional expectations.

I am honored as the Chief School Performance Officer to serve the students, parents, teachers, administrators, and staff of the Washoe County School District (WCSD). I have been in this position since 2011. Prior to serving in this capacity, I served as the Chief Accountability Officer for four years. I provided a decade of service in the area of Standards, Curricula, and Assessment for the Nevada Department of Education before coming to WCSD.

I entered the field of education after having a research faculty appointment at the University of Nevada Reno (UNR). Studying the resilience of students facing significant life challenges and specializing in the area of race and equity issues helped me to find my calling to serve children more directly.  I maintain an adjunct faculty appointment with UNR and have provided lectures annually in both Social Psychology and Education.

I earned my Doctorate degree in Social Psychology from UNR in 1995. As a social psychologist I view educational matters through a non-traditional lens. I value our obligation to all children, to not only support their academic growth but to support their social and emotional growth preparing them for success in any and all post-secondary settings. I believe there is no greater gift and no greater calling than to serve as an educator.

I have had the honor of working for the Washoe County School District for the past 20 years as both a high school teacher and school site administrator. I began my teaching career at McQueen High School before accepting a position teaching Social Studies at Opportunity High School. After five years at Opportunity School, I accepted an administrative position at the newly-opened North Valleys High School where I spent 6 years as a dean and assistant principal with responsibilities for curriculum, student assessment, student attendance and management. I proudly served as the principal of Earl Wooster High School for four years before becoming an Area Superintendent. I am proud of my service to the families of the Washoe County School District. I passionately believe in our community’s vision of graduating all students on time and ready for college and career opportunities. I look forward to working collaboratively with the students, parents, teachers, and support staff of the Acceleration Zone!

It has been my pleasure to work for the Washoe County School District for the last 23 years. I started as a 6th grade classroom teacher at Hidden Valley Elementary. After ten years in the classroom at 5 different grade levels, I was hired as the assistant principal at Libby Booth Elementary. In 2001, I became the principal at Alice Maxwell Elementary School in Sparks, Nevada, which was recognized by the WCSD as a Distinguished Title I school in the fall of 2007. My next assignment was as the principal of Kate Smith ES, a school designated as ”In Needs of Improvement.” After working collaboratively with staff, students and parents, Kate Smith was recognized by the State of Nevada as a Title I Distinguished School and a Title I Reward School in 2012.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from California State University, Chico, my Teaching Certificate from Chapman University and my Master of Arts in Education from the University of Phoenix.

I believe all students can learn and I look forward to working closely with all my schools and administrators to provide the best education for students in Area 1.

It is an honor for me to serve as the Area 2 Superintendent. I am an educator with over twenty years of experience in the Clark County School District, Las Vegas, Nevada, where I held the position of teacher, dean of students, assistant principal, Director of Human Resources, middle school and high school principal. In each of these positions, I have had the opportunity to develop and implement my philosophy of administrative and educational leadership, which is based on doing what is best for students through shared decision-making, collaboration, high expectations, and the development of human talent.

Over the past two decades, I have dedicated my career to improving educational opportunities for all students, but especially for minority students and English language learners. Most recently I served as principal of Von Tobel Middle School in Las Vegas, Nevada where I led restructuring efforts responsible for significant academic improvements and growth on various measures.

In addition to my work in K-12 education, I am an adjunct instructor for the Urban Studies Department of Southern Utah University, and an author and consultant for the International Center for Leadership in Education. I look forward to supporting Area 2 schools to ensure success for all students.

As the Area 3 Superintendent, I am honored to support our school and district communities as we work collaboratively toward the vision outlined in our district's strategic plan: "Every child, by name and face, to graduation."  I began my career with the Washoe County School District in 2012, and have thoroughly enjoyed working closely with principals, teachers, students, and other district personnel to build a passion and sense of urgency for continuous improvements to the quality of learning for every student.

In my daily practice as area superintendent, I work to develop a collaborative and supportive working relationship with each school principal and their team of school leaders in order to build upon an educational climate that is accustomed to regular and frequent visits to the classroom by professionals. I take pride in visiting classrooms frequently to observe and monitor the quality of curriculum, assessments, and instruction that engage students in successful learning. I believe that by setting high expectations and ensuring that in every classroom, students are provided with relevant and highly engaging learning experiences that capture their interest and desire to succeed, we will be well on our way toward reaching high levels of success for each learner.

I've been dedicated to public education for the past 26 years, and have loved every position I've held. I started my career as a special education teacher, and after 12 years at both middle school and elementary, general education and special education, I became a school principal. I received my doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Development form Arizona State University with a focus on leading diverse school communities, and held district leadership and university teaching positions thereafter. Prior to accepting the role of Area 3 Superintendent, I worked as the director of the Equity Alliance at ASU. In this role, I consulted with school districts in Arizona, California, and Nevada in areas related to educational equity, civil rights, and culturally responsive teaching and learning. It was in this role that I began my work collaborating with the Washoe County School District to support the district's focus on improved outcomes for all students. I remain committed to this work in my present role, and look forward to continuing my focus on improved teaching, learning, and leadership in the years to come.

It is an honor to serve as the Area Superintendent for Zone 4 in the Washoe County School District. My career in education began 18 years ago as a fourth grade teacher at Elmcrest Elementary School. While serving as a teacher for seven years, I developed a desire to influence change and improve student learning outcomes at a higher level. This desire resulted in me pursuing administrative positions. My first administrative role was in 2002, at Desert Heights, as the Dean of Students and Math Coordinator. In 2003, I became the principal of Lemmon Valley Elementary where I served for five years. Then, in 2008 I transferred to Van Gorder Elementary as the principal. In 2011, I was selected as the Performance Director for Zone 3. I am committed to working with the parents, and employees in Zone 4 to assure that every student graduates high school ready for college or a highly skilled career.
