Bernice Mathews Elementary School modernization project approved
Washoe County School District continues 2023 Facility Modernization Plan (FMP) work at Reno elementary school site.
Bernice Mathews Elementary School was built in the 1990’s and was identified in the 2023 FMP as a site to be a pilot school for the district’s “Pinwheel” elementary school prototype. This modernization and expansion work will be completed while the school site is fully operational. The upgraded school building may include a “trade-up” scenario for other students.
Highlights:
- One of the first 2023 FMP projects to be approved.
- “Pinwheel” elementary school prototype designated for future projects.
- State-of-the-art teaching and learning spaces include a new classroom wing, a collaborative hub space, a STEAM Lab, outdoor learning space, and maintenance upgrades.
- Design work began in 2024, and construction work is expected to begin in fall 2025.
- The anticipated completion date is scheduled for winter 2027.

The main entrance at Mathews ES is being remodeled and the construction crew started this work by knocking down the front piece.
