Students Bring Their Language Skills to
Annual Paiute Language Bowl Competition
What: The Washoe County School District (WCSD) is hosting the Annual Paiute Language Bowl, where students who are studying the Paiute language compete to showcase their knowledge and skills.
When: Friday, May 24
10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Reno-Sparks Indian Colony Gym
34 Reservation Road (Entrance on Golden Lane Building B)
Reno, NV
Details: WCSD offers three Paiute Language classes at Wooster High School, Reed High School, and Spanish Springs High School. The District is celebrating the achievements of Paiute language classes with this friendly competition among these schools and has invited our surrounding communities to participate.
Students from the three WCSD schools will join students from McDermitt Combined School, Yerington High School, and Schurz Elementary School, encouraging each other in preserving and revitalizing the Paiute language as they compete in the Paiute Language Bowl.
Students can complete the first and second year of Paiute Language and receive World Language credit to satisfy graduation requirements. Classes are offered to all interested WCSD students who want to study the language and culture derived from the Pyramid Lake Paiute dialect.
The Paiute Language curriculum has been provided to our students by two Paiute Language classroom teachers – Macario Mendoza-Carrillo and Gracie Dick-Cluette – who have brought new ideas and projects to the classroom every year. The goals for the program include students being able to form complete sentences and conduct everyday conversations in the Paiute Language by the end of their second year.
Media contact at the event is Fawn Hunter, Native American Culture & Education Program Coordinator for the Washoe County School District.
