WCSD Uses ESSER Funding to Provide
Vital Supports to Students
What: The Washoe County School District has received a total of $77 million in funding from ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief) III as part of the American Rescue Plan. After gathering input from the community, WCSD is using this funding to provide significant additional resources to support students’ academic recovery, social-emotional needs and success over the next three years.
As part of this effort, WCSD is using ESSER funding to provide additional help via the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) program to students at Spanish Springs High School. About 160 students who need additional assistance with their schoolwork -- or a quiet place to do their classwork – may leave their regular classes at any time during the school day to receive extra support from staff, either 1:1 or in small groups. This program was set up to assist students who need academic or emotional help to achieve success in school.
When: Friday, December 2
10:30 a.m.
Where: Spanish Springs High School (please meet in the office)
1065 Eagle Canyon Drive

Details: This program is staffed by educators who speak both English and Spanish fluently, an assistant who is a graduate student at UNR and an assistant who works with students on managing behavior. The program has proved successful in helping students to overcome academic and emotional obstacles that may have otherwise prevented them from achieving their goals. This program is also part of a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) study on mental health supports in schools and works very closely with classroom teachers and school-based mental health professionals.
Teacher Sara Felker, Teaching Assistants Neil Cahill and Kaitlyn Wright, Principal Sean Hall and ESSER Project Manager Adriana Publico will be available for interviews. Two students who participate in the program will also be available for interviews.
