Brown Elementary School Earns National Recognition as
Model Professional Learning Community at Work
Reno, NV (September 27, 2021) – For the third consecutive year, Brown Elementary School has earned national recognition as a Model Professional Learning Community at Work (PLC) by Solution Tree. Educators in the schools and districts selected for this elite recognition have shown a sustained commitment to helping all their students achieve at high levels. The PLC model enables staff to meet and collaborate in small groups on a weekly basis and focus on learning and results while using data and individual feedback to best serve their students.
Brown Elementary School is the only school in Nevada to earn this recognition in 2021. Sparks High School earned the award in 2017.
“We are thrilled to receive this important recognition for the third year in a row, and I am so proud of my team here at Brown Elementary School,” said Brown Elementary School Principal Angie Bryan. “We collaborate constantly to ensure our students are learning at high levels, and we are guided by our vision: ‘We are Committed to Learning Through Perseverance!’ As part of the Professional Learning Community process, we strategize and collaborate as a whole team to make instructional decisions that benefit students at all ages and learning levels. We believe this teamwork is essential for our student success.”
“Our educators and staff members at Brown Elementary School are driven and dedicated, and I am proud of their achievement,” said WCSD Area Superintendent Ann Marie Dickson, who oversees Brown Elementary School. “I have seen firsthand the ways in which they work together to support every student in their academic journey, and it is really impressive Their students and families flourish in so many ways because of the staff’s commitment to excellence, and I commend their hard work.”
“When teachers collaborate around student progress and instructional strategies, student outcomes improve,” said WCSD Superintendent Dr. Kristen McNeill. “This kind of collaboration is at the heart of Professional Learning Communities, and Brown Elementary School is a stellar example of this teaching model. Principal Bryan is an outstanding leader, and her staff members at Brown Elementary School are richly deserving of this honor. I thank all of them for working together to provide our students with the supports and resources they need to succeed.”
At Brown Elementary School, Principal Angie Bryan and her staff collaborated closely on creating a common vision and mission to achieve excellence in teaching using the acronym “HOPE”: High, clear expectations; Organized implementation; Positive community; and Engagement. Staff members at the school also created a mantra – “Got Grit!”—and posted it prominently around the school and in classrooms. Students are rewarded for perseverance and grit during Friday announcements, and staff members support each other by recognizing their colleagues’ hard work each month. Bryan says this kind of support and care for each other has helped the staff and students approach challenges and find solutions as a united and dedicated team.
