Statement from the Washoe County School District

August 11, 2021

The Washoe County School District relies on our local media outlets to provide accurate information regarding discussions that occur during public meetings of the Board of Trustees.

Following the August 10 meeting of the Board, the Reno Gazette-Journal took information out of context that was provided during a presentation by District staff regarding COVID-19 mitigation efforts. The information reported was sensationalized and inflammatory and did not serve to further constructive discussion or progress toward protecting the health and safety of our students and staff members.

Despite our repeated efforts to correct the record, the Reno Gazette-Journal has refused to remedy this situation. At a time when our community and our District are relying on the journalistic integrity of our local media outlets and their collective commitment to providing accurate, timely, and level-headed accounts of our District’s work and commitment to the health and safety of our students and staff members, this is inexcusable.

To clarify: The Washoe County School District continues to follow Governor’s Directive 048, which requires all students and staff members to wear masks inside our buildings, regardless of vaccination status. At Tuesday’s public meeting, the Board of Trustees voted to accept Superintendent Dr. Kristen McNeill’s recommendation.

WCSD believes in a layered COVID mitigation approach to include the use of masks, frequent handwashing, cleaning measures in our buildings and classrooms, social distancing wherever possible, assigned seating, and the consistent use of the self-screening tool by our students and staff members.
