WCSD Prepares for 2021-22 School Year:

Here’s What You Need to Know

 

Reno, NV. (August 6, 2021) – The Washoe County School District (WCSD) is preparing to welcome 62,000 students and more than 8,000 staff members to class for the 2021-22 school year.

With guidance from the Board of Trustees and local, state, and federal officials, the District is keeping the health and safety of all students and staff members as the highest priority, and is committed to providing comprehensive information and updates to students, families, and staff throughout the school year.

Website:

  • The District recently unveiled its newly redesigned website at washoeschools.net The website is easier to navigate and provides extensive information for the community.
  • WCSD has also issued an updated Response to Recovery Strategic Plan which provides a roadmap for academic recovery and the use of resources to support student learning, mental wellness, and academic acceleration.

Student Health Services:

  • The Department of Student Health Services encourages all families to learn about how to keep their students healthy by visiting the Healthy Students, Healthy Schools You will find information about how to support student learning by practicing healthy habits at home.
  • Students, families, and staff should use the self-screening tool available on the website before coming to school or work each day and follow its directions.
  • Students must receive the required immunizations before coming to school. The meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) and the Tdap are required for all Nevada 7th graders and new students in grades 7-12 enrolling in the Washoe County School District. For information about immunization requirements and low-cost clinics, click here.
  • The COVID vaccine is not currently required by the Washoe County School District for students or staff members.

COVID Mitigation Efforts:

  • As a result of Directive 048, in counties with populations greater than 100,000 (Clark and Washoe), all students from kindergarten through 12th grade must wear a face covering while inside school buildings, regardless of vaccination status. Staff members must also wear a mask while inside school buildings, also regardless of vaccination status.
  • All students and staff must wear face coverings while riding school buses or other District transportation. Staff and students may remove their face coverings while outside for activities and while eating or drinking. Under direction from the WCSD Board of Trustees, staff will be encouraged to explore innovative ways to provide “mask breaks” during the school day.

  • Under the Governor’s Directive, parents, visitors, volunteers, vendors, and guests who are unable or unwilling to wear face coverings under any circumstances or exemptions will not be allowed on school buses or inside school buildings.
  • WCSD is carefully monitoring guidance from local, state, and federal authorities surrounding COVID, and will communicate with families, staff members, and the community if this guidance changes.

Transportation:

  • The Washoe County School District offers free transportation for students who live outside the walk zone of their assigned school.
  • Families who need to look up which school their students are zoned to attend may visit the Transportation website for a link.
  • School bus stops/schedules are also available on the Transportation website.

Nutrition Services:

  • All school meals will be free for all students regardless of family income during the 2021-22 school year.

  • To apply for Free and Reduced meals, click here. (Although all students will receive free meals for the 21-22 school year, families who complete the Free and Reduced meal application may be eligible to receive assistance with Wi-Fi, SAT test fees, and/or other high school testing fees.)
  • For North Star Online School, 5-day breakfast and lunch boxes will be available to all online students. These meals can be picked up once a week at the Nutrition Services Center located at 585 Spice Island Drive. Families can find the details and sign-up at washoeschools.net/Domain/69.

Back to School Expo:

  • The District will host the Back to School Expo on Saturday, August 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Meadowood Mall. The first hour of the event will be set aside for families who are immune compromised, and the use of masks is strongly encouraged.
  • A variety of District departments will be represented at the event including Transportation, Nutrition Services, Registration, and Student Health Services.

Registering Your Student for School:

  • Families whose students have not been registered for the coming school year are urged to visit the website and start the registration process as soon as possible.

Family Resource Centers:

  • Family Resource Centers serve all members of the Washoe County community regardless of their age or income, providing food programs, employment assistance, parenting education, adult literacy and English classes, utility assistance, shelter/housing, medical/dental/mental health services, adult literacy programs, and English classes.
  • Family Resource Centers offer resources, referrals, and ongoing support.
  • Staff members also work to re-engage with students who have left school before graduation, identify barriers to attendance, increase student engagement, assess academic needs, and re-enroll students in school.

Attendance:

  • Regular, meaningful attendance in school should be a high priority for all students and families. Attendance plays a critical role in student learning success.

WCSD School Police:

  • The WCSD School Police Department is dedicated to providing a safe and secure learning environment for students and staff members. An important part of its mission is promoting traffic safety in the community.

North Star Online School:

  • North Star Online School will provide online learning for Washoe County School District students during the 2021-22 school year.
  • North Star students are independent learners who wish to engage in an individualized and flexible online learning experience. They are supported by highly qualified teachers who are located on campus and available at school, by phone, or via email to assist students.
  • North Star’s rigorous curriculum is accredited and correlates to the curriculum used in WCSD’s traditional schools. The online curriculum allows students to learn at their own pace, whether they desire to take extra classes and graduate early or need to slow down in order to learn and understand a subject more thoroughly.
