Education Alliance of Washoe County Receives $10,000 Grant from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Nevada for Students in Need

Ed Alliance logo Reno, NV (November 17, 2020) – The Education Alliance of Washoe County announced it has received a community funding grant from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Nevada to help bolster its ongoing efforts to provide free laptops to Washoe County School District students for distance learning.

“Support from partners like Anthem is critical right now,” said Kendall Inskip, Executive Director of Education Alliance. “We are still working to close the digital divide in Washoe County.”

Anthem provided the $10,000 grant to purchase laptops for Washoe County School District students whose families cannot afford to purchase a computer for distance learning. Education Alliance’s goal is to provide equitable access to technology for students to continue their learning and connect with their teachers and classmates, regardless of their means.

“We know many families across Nevada are still struggling with the effects of the pandemic, which has underscored many challenges, including the disparity between those who have access to technology and those who don’t,” said Mike Murphy, President, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Nevada. “We are proud to partner with the Education Alliance to support Washoe County School’s distance learning efforts and help bridge the digital divide by getting more students connected.”

In July, the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees voted for middle and high school students to participate in part-time distance learning and gave all families the option of full-time distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although many students and families have computers to access district-provided online resources, approximately 4,000 WCSD students do not have the needed technology at home.

Local businesses, organizations, and individuals are encouraged to donate to help close the digital gaps in Washoe County. ITS Logistics is collecting new or gently used laptops/desktops at its offices located at 555 Vista Blvd, Sparks, Monday-Friday from 11am to 2pm. For more information or to donate a financial gift, visit https://ed-alliance.org/DLLD/.

WCSD Families in need of computers or WiFi access can inform their school leadership or visit https://www.washoeschools.net/connectingkids to complete a request form.
