Amazon Celebrates “World Smile Day” with
Generous Gift to Gerlach K-12 School
Gerlach, NV (October 6, 2020) – In honor of World Smile Day, representatives of Amazon paid a visit to Gerlach K-12 School, bringing a check for $20,000. The generous donation will be used to support technology needs at the school.
The check arrived in an Amazon box covered with colorful balloons and was opened by staff members in the library of the school.
“Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude for this incredible gift,” said Assistant Principal Stacey Black. “We have been blessed to have a strong partnership with Amazon since 2016. Our families all come out to share our holiday celebration with them every year. But this is truly above and beyond. Like many other schools in districts across the country, we have been struggling with how to provide digital equity to our students during these challenging times, and now we have a solution.”
“Amazon has been proudly supporting the Northern Nevada community since our first fulfillment center opened here in 1999," said Joseph Wistos, Site Leader of Amazon's Reno Fulfillment Center. “We recognize that the pandemic has created new challenges for schools, students and families. We are honored to provide Gerlach K-12 School with funding support to help eliminate technology barriers and set students up for success in the virtual learning environment."
“We are grateful for such a generous gift to Gerlach K-12 School, and we extend our sincere thanks to everyone at Amazon,” said Washoe County School District (WCSD) Superintendent Dr. Kristen McNeill. “Our community partners play such an important role in our District, and I am thankful for their support of our students and staff members.”
Amazon has partnered with a number of WCSD schools and has maintained an ongoing partnership with Gerlach K-12 school over the years. As this year’s celebration approached, Amazon reached out once again to Gerlach K-12 School to ask about classroom needs and learned that students and staff members needed some classroom technology upgrades. In addition, the school is working with families and staff members to solicit ideas and determine in what ways they might use some of the funding to support educational camps and infrastructure improvements.
Amazon also brings gifts and food for Gerlach families during the holidays.
“They truly are phenomenal partners for us,” said Stacey Black. “We are proud to have them as part of the Gerlach K-12 family.” High resolution images of the donation event can be found here.'
