Reno, NV (October 29, 2020) – Nearly 3,000 students in the Washoe County School District (WCSD) are experiencing homelessness and do not have the basic necessities to stay warm and dry as the cold winter season approaches. Education Alliance of Washoe County, is partnering with Big Reno Coat Drive to collect new winter coats for students in need in Washoe County through Monday, November 30. Visit for a full list of drop off locations throughout Reno and Sparks.

“Keeping students warm and dry is more important than ever this year,” said Kendall Inskip, Executive Director of the Education Alliance of Washoe County. “To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, WCSD bus windows, roof hatches, and air vents will be opened to provide enhanced flow of fresh air during bus rides to and from school. Students will need to stay bundled for the duration of their bus ride during the winter months.”

Big Reno Coat Drive has been collaborating with local organizations and Title 1 schools to keep the community warm since 2005.

“This year, due to COVID-19 Restrictions, The Big Reno Coat Drive can only accept new winter coats (with tags attached),” said Lindy McQuirk, Executive Director of Big Reno Coat Drive. “We need the community to help us reach every student in need. In addition to coats in all sizes, we also accept new hats and mittens, and financial donations at,” McQuirk added.

WCSD has worked closely with partners including the Office of the Governor, Washoe County Government, the Washoe County Health District, and other agencies in Washoe County in response to COVID-19 to protect the health and well-being of WCSD students and staff.
