Earlier today, the Washoe County School District learned that the Nevada Department of Education and State Superintendent Jhone Ebert have asked the United States Department of Education to waive assessments, accountability, school identification, and reporting requirements established by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) for the 2019-2020 school year.
This step was necessary because of ongoing uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although the waiver has not been officially granted at this point, we will work with our school administrators to ensure we have useful data to use for decision making and improvement. This will allow us all the opportunity to look beyond test scores toward other rich information sources.
On behalf of the Washoe County School District, I want to thank Superintendent Ebert and the Nevada Department of Education for advocating for our students and staff members during this extraordinary and unprecedented time of challenge for our community. We deeply appreciate State Superintendent Ebert’s willingness to provide meaningful support for our students, families, and school districts as we all move forward together in our educational mission.
We deeply appreciate our continued partnership with the state and with our fellow school districts in Nevada, and look forward to continuing to work closely together through this crisis.
