WCSD Seeks Input from Families At Important
Zoning Advisory Committee Meeting
Reno, NV (January 14, 2020) – As part of its ongoing commitment to maintain open lines of communication with families and to consider public input in making decisions, the Washoe County School District (WCSD) is encouraging parents, families, students, and community members to participate in the Zoning Advisory Committee meeting on Thursday, January 16. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Silver Lake Elementary School, located at 8719 Red Baron Boulevard in Reno.
The Zoning Advisory Committee evaluates and makes recommendations related to school attendance zoning. WCSD committees are comprised of volunteers from the community who advise the Board of Trustees and the superintendent on a variety of topics pertaining to the District. The work of committees helps to ensure that the community has a voice in District governance.
At the upcoming meeting on January 16, the Zoning Advisory Committee will be discussing school attendance zoning for the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years. As WCSD is constructing and preparing to open more schools, the District is changing school zoning boundaries in several neighborhoods for the 2021-2022 school year to alleviate overcrowding and accommodate growing numbers of students. In addition, the District is planning for school zoning boundaries that will be impacted when the new Procter Hug High School opens in August 2022.
At the January 16 meeting, the committee will be discussing a new elementary school being built in the Cold Springs area and potential zoning changes that may impact:
- Desert Heights Elementary School
- Gomes Elementary School
- Silver Lake Elementary School
- Stead Elementary School
- Cold Springs Middle School
- O’Brien STEM Academy
Also, committee members will discuss the anticipated work and timeline for additional elementary school and high school rezoning needs in the future.
The committee will be discussing and may make recommendations regarding the new Procter Hug High School being built in the Wildcreek area that is scheduled to open in August 2022, and the potential zoning boundaries that could affect the Spanish Springs High School and current Procter Hug High School zoning boundaries.
The potential changes will impact many schools and students, and at WCSD the voices of parents and families are critical. Members of the community – specifically families whose children may be affected by possible zoning changes – are invited to learn about the possible zoning changes and provide input to the committee. For those who are unable to attend this important meeting, questions or comments may be submitted online to zoning@washoeschools.net.
