WCSD Approves Contract With
Washoe Education Association
Reno, NV (November 12, 2019) – At its regular public meeting, the Washoe County School District (WCSD) Board of Trustees voted to approve a two-year contract with the Washoe Education Association (WEA), which includes a 3 percent increase in salary for all teachers. The contract is in effect from July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2021, and was ratified by the WEA membership last week.
“We are pleased to approve this agreement with our outstanding teachers,” said Katy Simon Holland, president of the WCSD Board of Trustees. “We are grateful to Gov. Steve Sisolak and our Nevada State Legislature for supporting this pay raise for our hard-working educators.”
The contract includes the 3 percent Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) in the first year of the biennium, as well as salary step increases. Additionally, the District will pay all bargaining unit members’ increased cost for the employee portion of health insurance premium beginning in January 2020, if any. The pay increase will be retroactive to July 1, 2019.
Under terms of the negotiated agreement, teachers could receive a 1 percent COLA in Fiscal Year 2020-21 if the District has a surplus of at least $2.9 million in Fiscal Year 2019-20. If there is no surplus, no COLA will be paid, and if the surplus is between zero and $2.9 million, a smaller COLA will be calculated for teachers.
The Board of Trustees has also approved negotiated agreements with the Washoe School Principals’ Association (WSPA), Association of Professional and Technical Administrators (APTA), and the Washoe Education Support Professionals (WESP).
“I am grateful that the WEA and our Board of Trustees have reached this agreement,” said WCSD Interim Superintendent Dr. Kristen McNeill. “Our educators work hard in our schools and classrooms every day, and they are dedicated to the well-being of every single one of our students. I am thankful for the positive and professional ongoing relationship our District enjoys with our teachers, and I know we all look forward to continuing that relationship in the future on behalf of our students and their families.”
