Reno Sunrise Rotary Club Brings

“Let’s Go to College” Campaign to Students

What: The “Let’s Go to College” campaign encourages students to begin thinking about attending college while still attending elementary school. Nearly 800 students at Alice Smith Elementary School are expected to attend this series of “Let’s Go to College” assemblies.

This is the fourth year of the cooperative effort between the Reno Sunrise Rotary Club, Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC), the Education Alliance of Washoe County, and the Washoe County School District (WCSD). It is designed to remind elementary school students that college is within their reach.

Three assemblies are scheduled for this event.

When: Friday, November 8

           2 p.m. to 2:20 p.m. – 2nd and 3rd Grades

           2:30 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. – Kindergarten and 1st Grade

           3 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. – 4th, 5th, and 6th Grades

Where: Alice Smith Elementary School

            1070 Beckwourth Dr.

             Reno

Details: Working in partnership with the Reno Sunrise Rotary Club, TMCC, and the Education Alliance of Washoe County, WCSD supports efforts to reach out to students early in their educational careers regarding their options after graduation from high school. Some of these options include attending college, pursuing highly-skilled careers, or military service.

“Let’s Go to College” representatives will visit Alice Smith Elementary School, where they will distribute notebooks and pencils to students, each engraved with the “Let’s Go to College” or TMCC logos. These items help encourage discussion of college throughout the year.

TMCC’s mascot, “Wizard the Lizard,” will also visit the assemblies as the supplies are distributed.

Editors’ Note: The Rotary Clubs have donated $2,000 to this year’s effort to reach more than 1,000 students in Reno and Sparks. Funds are raised during community events including Reno Sunrise Rotary Club's Edible Pedal 100 bike ride (http://www.ediblepedal100.org/)

Members of the media are invited to attend this event and talk with members of the Reno Sunrise Rotary Club, TMCC, and WCSD about their efforts to encourage every child to achieve success in school.
