Washoe Education Association Pays Run for Education Registration Fees For Members and Their Family
Reno, NV (September 6, 2019) – The Education Alliance of Washoe County is planning the 2019 Run for Education to raise money for PE, student wellness, and nutrition education in Washoe County elementary schools. The event will be held on Sunday, October 20 at the Outlets at Legends in front of SCHEELS. There will be a 4K race, as well as the Sparks Marina March and a Fun Run for little legs, along with a lively Fitness and Family Fair for children and families to enjoy a variety of activity stations and booths. The Washoe Education Association (WEA), the educator’s union in Washoe County, has been a long time sponsor of the event, and pays registration fees for members and their families. The registration deadline is Friday, September 20th to receive a t-shirt. Late registrations will be accepted until Friday, October 4 (no t-shirt guaranteed). WEA members can submit registrations to their School Run Coordinator, or send in school mail to the WEA office.
WEA President, Natha Anderson shared why the Run for Education is important to WEA.
Why does WEA sponsor the Run for Education year after year? WEA is a proud sponsor of the Run for Education because our students’ wellbeing matters. As has been stated by Jackie Lund in Education Weekly, “We know that stress can impact learning. We have a lot of students in elementary school who are suffering from stress. We know that physical education is a way to relieve the body of stress so they can be ready to learn.”
What message do you have for the community about the Run for Education? This is a great way to support our schools, our students and come together as a community. It is a way to show we care about the people our students will be – not just for the grades they will earn but more for the healthy lifestyle they will have in the future.
Tell us about PE when you were an elementary student. So many odd memories – believe it or not square dancing in 4th grade, the jump rope “competitions” with double dutch, kickball tournaments, the sheer joy of racing for the tree far away from the classroom. Those basketball hoops were soooo high, soccer, track and field. But it was also the picking of the teams and how to figure out the order of who was up, how to include everyone and play fair. Great memories!
If you are interested in sponsoring the Run for Education, contact the Education Alliance at (775) 353-6950 or visit ed-alliance.org. Sponsor benefits include company logo on the back of an expected 4,000+ runners’ t-shirts, tabling opportunity and banners at event, inclusion in all advertising/marketing, and, and recognition on race day.
The Education Alliance’s Run for Education is one of the largest family and community running events in Northern Nevada that raises money directly impacting WCSD students. In 2018, more than 8,500 people attended, including 600 teachers, and 90 schools participated, including charter schools. There were 3,984 runners and proceeds from sponsorships provided a $2,000 Kids in Motion grant to 51 schools to fund physical education and nutrition activities, impacting 30,000+ elementary school-aged children. Currently WCSD elementary schools receive little or no funding for PE.
