Three new schools will welcome students on Monday morning
Reno, NV (August 9, 2019) – The Washoe County School District (WCSD) will welcome students and their families back to school on Monday, August 12, as the District ushers in the 2019-2020 school year. Three new schools—Desert Skies Middle School, Sky Ranch Middle School, and Nick Poulakidas Elementary School—will open their doors to students this year.
“The first day of the new school year is such an exciting time,” said WCSD Board President Katy Simon Holland. “It’s a happy time for reuniting with friends, a day of uncertainty and nervousness for many facing changes, and a day filled with potential and opportunity to achieve great things. It’s even more exciting this year because we are opening three brand-new schools. I know our teachers and staff are eager to meet their new students as the school year gets underway, and I look forward to welcoming everyone back to school for another year of teaching and learning.”
“All of us at WCSD have worked hard over the summer to prepare our schools for our students’ return to classes,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Kristen McNeill. “Every year begins with new promise for academic success, and I am confident this year will be no different. We are dedicated to ensuring that all of our students receive the supports and resources they need to learn and grow, and we are excited to welcome everyone back for another great school year.”
Over the summer, construction was completed at the three new school sites, and District Capital Projects staff members performed $15 million in repairs and renovations at a number of schools. This work was funded by the passage of WC-1 in 2016, as the District keeps its promises to the community to maintain and repair existing schools while constructing needed new schools to alleviate overcrowding and provide equitable learning spaces for our 64,000 students.
Not all WCSD students will return to school on August 12: students at Incline schools follow a different calendar and will begin classes on Monday, August 26. Students who attend Dodson Elementary School will also begin classes on August 26, as scheduled capital projects work including replacement of the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system at the school is completed.
