Brown Elementary School Recognized as

Model Professional Learning Community at Work

School honored for high levels of student achievement

Reno, NV (May 31, 2019) – In recognition of its sustained success in raising student achievement, Brown Elementary School has been named a Model Professional Learning Community at Work (PLC) by Solution Tree. The school is among just 200 schools and districts in the U.S. and Canada to achieve this honor in 2019, and is the only school in the state of Nevada to receive the recognition this year.

Educators in the schools and districts selected for this elite recognition have shown a sustained commitment to helping all of their students achieve at high levels.

“The staff at Brown Elementary School has worked collaboratively over the past several years, focusing on student growth utilizing the components of the PLC framework to truly focus on students,” said Angie Bryan, principal of Brown Elementary School. “We are excited to receive this award and feedback from Solution Tree to continue to improve and focus on student growth and achievement through staff collaboration and teamwork.”

“We are proud of our students and staff members, and this is a great accomplishment for everyone at Brown Elementary School,” said Richard Swanberg, the area superintendent who oversees the school. “They are focused and determined to improve their skills, and they have certainly achieved a great goal. We congratulate everyone at the school for their hard work.”

The PLC model allows staff to meet and collaborate in small groups on a weekly basis and focus on learning and results while using data and individual feedback to best serve students.

At Brown Elementary School, staff members set high goals for growth and achievement in math and English Language Arts (ELA), by ensuring that each student’s individual learning needs are met using Nevada Academic Content Standards and 21 Century learning practices. Staff members engaged in professional development throughout the year.

Based upon the spring 2018 Parent Climate Survey, 88 percent of parents agreed or strongly agreed that their child was receiving a quality education at Brown Elementary School. The staff members worked to improve that rating to 90 percent or higher in 2019.

The school also hosted a Family Night, where families learned instructional strategies and games they could use at home to help strengthen their students’ math, ELA, and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills. At the same event, staff members opened a computer lab and helped parents navigate the District’s Infinite Campus system and website, and updated parents on Nevada Academic Content Standards, Nevada K.I.D.S. Read, and counseling services available at the school.

“We are honored to receive this recognition and we will continue to utilize the Professional Learning Community Process for student and staff  growth and learning.” said Principal Bryan. “The Professional Learning Community Process has enabled us to strategize and collaborate as a whole team to make school-wide effective instructional decisions that benefit all students.”
