Groundbreaking for Marce Herz Middle School
What: Groundbreaking ceremony for the Marce Herz Middle School, which will relieve overcrowding at area middle- and elementary schools and accommodate projected growth in south Reno.
When: Wednesday, May 22
10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
Where: In the gravel lot across from the entrance to Hunsberger Elementary School (Parking is available in the Hunsberger parking lot at 2505 Crossbow Court, Reno)
Details: This school is named for Marce Herz, who taught in northern Nevada for 10 years, including five years at Mt. Rose Elementary School. She was a world-class athlete who set U.S. and world records in track and field sports, as well as 16 amateur alpine ski titles.
She was a co-founder of Sky Tavern Jr. Ski Program, the oldest and largest non-profit ski/snowboarding program in the United States, and possibly the world. The program has instructed more than 100,000 children since its formation in 1948.
Editors’ Note: Marce Herz (pronounced “Marcy Hers”) Middle School is slated to open in time for the 2020 school year. Following brief comments, there will be a ceremonial groundbreaking and photo opportunities, then interviews with District representatives and students from Hunsberger Elementary School.
