WCSD Partners with Community to Choose Site for
New Elementary School in Cold Springs
Reno, NV (February 7, 2019) –The Washoe County School District (WCSD) announced today that it is moving forward with plans for a new elementary school in Cold Springs at a new location, based on community input.
WCSD initially planned to build this new elementary school next to Cold Springs Middle School. At a community meeting regarding the project last year, however, residents voiced concerns with the location. Since there were several other locations where this school could be built, WCSD set out to survey the entire Cold Springs community to determine the preferred location.
The District organized and posted an online survey and also brought paper surveys to multiple community and school locations in Cold Springs. More than 700 members of the community submitted their completed surveys to the District, and the clear majority of respondents preferred a different location for the school—not at the location initially proposed by the District, but instead off Briar Drive.
WCSD engineers did some research and determined that a school at the new location could be built at roughly the same cost and on the same timeline. WCSD was happy to change its plans and move forward with planning this school in this new location.
“Whenever there are options for site selection, we prefer to ask for input from the community,” said Adam Searcy, WCSD chief facilities management officer. “We are excited to move forward with this project, and very appreciative of Bob Lissner and Lifestyle Homes for their partnership and commitment to sell us this land and provide construction services at a discount that will save the school district over $1 million.”
This new school will be built using the same design as the new Nick Poulakidas Elementary School currently under construction in south Reno. The new elementary school in Cold Springs is scheduled to open in 2021.
