WCSD Rolls Out Regional Weather List
System designed to customize Digital School Days by region
Reno, NV (January 31, 2019) – As part of its ongoing commitment to keeping students and staff safe, the Washoe County School District (WCSD) is implementing a new regionalized system when Digital School Days are called due to hazardous weather and road conditions.
The District is now divided into eight geographical regions—the Regional Weather List— which allows the District to designate Digital School Days for schools in areas that are more impacted by weather, while implementing two-hour delays or regular school schedules in areas that are less impacted.
“The safety of our students and staff members is our primary concern,” said Dr. Kristen McNeill, WCSD deputy superintendent. “Our District covers some 6,300 square miles, and our weather systems can be unpredictable and dynamic. We know that some parts of the District can receive a large amount of snow and ice—making travel to and from school unsafe— while others are less affected, often on the same day. This system allows us to be more nimble and flexible: we can designate a Digital School Day for part of the District, which allows those students to receive lessons from home with their teachers so their education progress is not impacted, while students and staff at schools that are not designated to be on a Digital School Day attend class as normal.”
“Our Transportation employees work hard to determine which parts of our District are safe for travel and which should be avoided by our buses and families due to bad weather,” said Rick Martin, director of transportation for WCSD. “We are driving those roads and testing conditions beginning long before dawn, and we make the best decisions we can under the circumstances each time we receive inclement weather. This system allows us to customize Digital School Days and minimize the risk to our students and their families.”
WCSD is now divided into eight regions—lettered A through H—which are grouped by geographical location. The regions are listed on the District website and can be accessed by visiting
The District will continue to send Connect Ed calls, emails, and text messages to families in the affected regions to inform them of Digital School Days or two-hour delays. Connect Ed calls will be sent to all students and staff attending each school, so students who are attending schools outside their zoned schools will also be informed via pre-recorded phone calls.
The District will continue to use the following tools to provide updated information about Digital School Days and two-hour delays:
• Contact local media outlets
• Post updates on District social media pages (Facebook and Twitter)
• Parent Line: (775) 334-8373
• District website: www.washoeschools.net
