Get Moving! WCSD Students and Staff
Celebrate Eighth Annual “Nevada Moves” Day
Reno, NV (March 13, 2017) – Students and staff members at eight schools in the Washoe County School District (WCSD) will celebrate the eighth annual Nevada Moves event during the week of March 13-17. This yearly event draws attention to healthy activities like walking and bicycling to school, and is designed to encourage the whole family to adopt a healthier, more active lifestyle.
“This event is an important part of our outreach effort to our 64,000 students and staff members,” said WCSD School Police Officer MJ Cloud, coordinator of Safe Routes to School. “Everyone can benefit from more physical activity, so this is a great reminder that warmer weather is on its way, and it’s time to get out and enjoy it! Walking or biking to school helps keep our air cleaner and reduce traffic congestion near our schools.”
This year, RTC, Safe Kids, and NDOT have partnered with Safe Routes to School to plan a “Walk and Bike to School” event at Jerry Whitehead Elementary School in Sparks. The students, staff members, and parents will gather at two different locations, review bicycle and pedestrian safety tips, enjoy some fun incentives, and then walk/bike together to school to start their day.
“Events like these can help everyone establish healthier habits they can maintain for the rest of their lives,” said Officer Cloud. “We know that healthy students arrive at school ready to learn, and they learn better when they feel good. We look forward to this event every year, and I know our students and staff members do, too.”
More than 100 schools from districts across the state will participate in Nevada Moves Week events and activities beginning Monday, March 13.
