 Reading and math are the foundation for learning.  Establishing skills for your child is key to their success in school and in life.  You can access a variety of free books and interactive literacy resources for your child through the Washoe County Libraries.  See the list below for reading and math opportunities. 

 

1. Sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge 2021 Tails and Tales to earn a FREE book, virtual awards, and participate in BINGO activities. Visit Summer Reading Challenge 2021 (washoecountylibrary.us)
2. You can create an account at the Beanstack page and then click “Register”. If you had an account last year, you can just log in to get started.
3. Log your reading every day this summer.
4. This math website has a variety of fun and engaging kindergarten math games.

Children need academic skills and must also develop self-awareness and be able to name and recognize emotions.  These are what we consider social and emotional skills that every child needs to develop.   Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)  is a process for helping children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Kindergarten screening is the week of August 9^th-August 13^th.  During this week your child will attend one 30-minute screening appointment.  Please contact your child’s school if you don’t already have a screening appointment.  During this screening appointment we will introduce and welcome you and your child to the school and the kindergarten classroom.  We will also collect and share information on the screening we will do with your child.  This is a great opportunity to ask the teacher questions about kindergarten. 

 

Each school will also host a Kindergarten Kick-Off event where you will meet other families in your child’s future kindergarten class.    

 

The first day of kindergarten is Monday, August 16^th.

Throughout the school year, you can also obtain additional resources and support for your child’s educational journey.  The district has a program for families to learn how to support their children in school. 

 

Parent University provides free learning sessions for families.
