Counselor Newsletter September 2019
Welcome to IMS! We are so excited for the 2019-20 school year. It’s been wonderful getting reacquainted with our returning students and getting to know our new 6th graders. I hope to meet all parents at Back to School Night on Thursday, September 5. But for the those of you who may not make it, let me briefly introduce myself as your child’s counselor. My name is Christine Huerta and I am a resident of Incline Village since 2016. My school counseling career started in the Clark County School District in Las Vegas in 2000. I have a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology, extended graduate studies in Psychology, Counseling and Executive Life Coaching, and a recognized National Board Certified School Counselor.
The Incline Middle School Counseling Department mission is to support rigorous academics while cultivating positive character traits and promoting social emotional learning in order to prepare students for the expectations of high school, college and career. Specifically, my role is to help all students apply academic achievement strategies, manage emotions and apply interpersonal skills and plan for postsecondary options. This is done through school wide programming, classroom lessons, group and individual counseling. Through your child’s Enrichment class, lessons are given weekly and parents are notified of the topics, themes and activities for each month through this newsletter. For instance, September’s lessons are dedicated to the topics of Diversity, Culture, Gender and Inclusivity with Students. These lessons are part of the WCSD Civil Rights & Me curriculum as well as the Digital Citizenship lessons. Topics will cover several of the Social Emotional Learning components including self-awareness, social awareness, and relationship skills.
A counselor presentation is scheduled for all students in the first week of September. Students will learn about the school counselor role, why and how to request a meeting, confidentiality and exciting opportunities at IMS.
It is my philosophy that families and schools are partners in a mutual effort toward a shared goal – supporting our students as learners achieving their highest potential. If you have any questions regarding lessons or need assistance for your child, please feel free to call me at 775-832-4220 ext. 41006 or email Christine.email@example.com.
