WCSD Now Offering Free Lunch to All Students at All Schools

Free meals available to all children and students engaged in

fulltime Distance Learning, Hybrid A-B schedules,

and fulltime in-classroom learning

Reno, NV (Sept. 24, 2020) – Thanks to a waiver issued by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which oversees school lunch programs, the Washoe County School District (WCSD) has joined with a majority of other school districts throughout the country and will now provide free meals to all students at all WCSD schools through December 31, 2020.

The free meals will be distributed to students who are engaged in classroom learning, Hybrid A-B schedules, and fulltime Distance Learning. Schedules and locations for distribution are available on the WCSD website at https://www.washoeschools.net/Page/15053

“We know it is absolutely imperative that our students have access to nutritious meals every day in order to maximize their ability to learn and grow,” said Lianka Soliz, director of WCSD Nutrition Services. “We are grateful to the USDA, which has made it possible for us to provide these meals to all of our students without charge through the end of December, and we invite our students and families to participate in this meals program at each of our sites.”

“Our Nutrition Services Department is constantly advocating for our students and supporting their basic needs,” said WCSD Superintendent Dr. Kristen McNeill. “I hope our families and students will take part in this program in order to ensure our children are receiving healthy, balanced meals during this difficult time for so many of our families. WCSD stands ready to provide these essential provisions to any child in need.”

Students at elementary schools will receive daily meals as usual. Middle- and high school students who are attending classes on the A-B hybrid scheduling model will receive meals when they are in school and will receive a breakfast and lunch pack of meals at the end of each school day for the following day when they are learning at home.

Seven-day meal packs (breakfasts and lunches) will be distributed to families whose students are engaged in the fulltime Distance Learning model—as well as any child under the age of 18, whether or not they are a student in WCSD-- at six sites throughout the District beginning Tuesday, September 29.
