WCSD Students Shine at the 2026 Paiute Bowl

WCSD Students Shine at the 2026 Paiute Bowl
Andi Cassinari

WCSD students recently came together with peers from across northern Nevada to celebrate learning, teamwork, and cultural knowledge at the annual Paiute Bowl—an event that highlights the importance of Native American education and language preservation.

Students from WCSD high schools competed against one another and alongside teams from Pyramid Lake High School and Yerington High School, creating an atmosphere of friendly competition, collaboration, and shared respect for culture and history.

WCSD currently offers Paiute Language classes at Wooster High School, Reed High School, and Spanish Springs High School, and the courses are open to all students. Students may complete first- and second‑year Paiute Language classes and earn World Language credit toward graduation, while gaining a deeper understanding of Nevada’s Indigenous communities.

This year’s Paiute Bowl concluded with strong performances from all participating schools. Spanish Springs High School earned 1st Place, followed by Pyramid Lake High School in 2nd Place and Yerington High School in 3rd Place. Reed High School placed 4th, with Wooster High School earning 5th Place.

The Paiute Language curriculum—developed through the collaborative efforts of the Reno/Sparks Indian Colony Language/Culture Program and the WCSD Native American Education Program—focuses on helping students build conversational fluency by the end of their second year. Coursework includes introductions and greetings, colors and numbers, family members, plants and animals, calendar and seasons, as well as the history of Nevada bands and boarding schools.

WCSD is proud of all students and educators who participated in the Paiute Bowl. Events like this provide meaningful opportunities for students to connect across schools and districts, celebrate academic achievement, and honor the living Paiute language and culture.
