Washoe County School District Announces Retirement of Superintendent Joe Ernst

Washoe County School District Announces Retirement of Superintendent Joe Ernst
Giovanna Casazza

The Washoe County School District (WCSD) announced today that Superintendent Joe Ernst has shared his decision to retire from his role as Superintendent, effective July 7, 2026, following a 32-year career in education.

“Serving the students, families, and employees of WCSD has truly been the honor of a lifetime,” said Superintendent Ernst. “What I will always be most proud of is the people. The dedication of our teachers, principals, support staff, bus drivers, leadership team, and all WCSD employees is extraordinary. Every day they show up for students with commitment and care, and it has been inspiring to be part of that work. Seeing our students grow and thrive as they engage in their education has been the most rewarding part of my time here. My experiences with them give me great hope for the future.”

Ernst shared that the decision to retire comes after thoughtful reflection and a desire to spend more time with his family.

“Education has been such a meaningful and fulfilling career for me,” Ernst said. “While this work has meant so much, this next chapter will allow me to spend more time with my wife and children and enjoy the moments that matter most.”

“We are grateful for Superintendent Ernst’s steady leadership and his decades of service to education and to WCSD,” said Board President Adam Mayberry. “He has led with integrity, thoughtfulness, and a clear focus on what is best for students, staff, and families. While his leadership will certainly be missed, we are grateful for the impact he has made on WCSD and wish him a well-deserved retirement filled with time and memories with his beautiful family.”

Ernst has served WCSD in numerous roles throughout his career, including teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, Area Superintendent, Chief Accountability Officer, and most recently Superintendent. During his tenure, he worked alongside educators, staff, families, and community partners to strengthen systems that support student success while also planning for the long-term sustainability of the district.

“WCSD has strong momentum and incredible people who are committed to students,” Ernst said. “I have great confidence that WCSD will continue to move forward and build on the progress that has been made.”

Ernst will continue to serve in his role through the end of the school year and is committed to supporting a smooth leadership transition in the months ahead.

With the retirement announcement, the WCSD Board of Trustees will discuss at a future meeting the next steps in naming the next superintendent.
