Students Encouraged to Engage With “Youth Ride Free on RTC” Program

The Washoe County School District (WCSD) is reminding students about the "Youth Ride Freed on RTC" program, a partnership with the Regional Transportation Commission that allows WCSD students to ride RTC buses for free to destinations in the city. The program has proved popular with students -- they took 240,353 free trips to school, work, libraries, events, and activities throughout the city beginning last summer! The partnership will continue this summer and throughout the coming school year.

Children under six years of age must ride with a paying adult. Students currently enrolled in WCSD schools are eligible to ride RTC buses free.

“We are excited with the positive reception we’ve received from our students and families over the past year,” said Adam Searcy, Chief Operating Officer for WCSD. “These transportation options represent an important part of our efforts to combat absenteeism in our schools and help expand opportunities for our students to travel to work and events in the area. We look forward to welcoming more students into the program.”

Before August 1, students simply need to show their WCSD Student Identification to ride an RTC bus without paying a fare. Beginning August 1, they may register for the program for the coming school year. Passes are scanned from a student’s phone, and paper passes are available for students who do not have a phone.
