Students from Gerlach K-12 School joined dozens of residents and spectators from other parts of northern Nevada when the world's largest operating steam locomotive -- Big Boy No. 4014 -- paid a visit to Gerlach during its tour of the western United States.

Of the eight remaining Big Boys in existence today, this is the only train still operating. The appearance is part of the 250th anniversary of American independence and innovation.

"It was a wonderful opportunity and a historic event for our students to witness," said Gerlach K-12 Principal Stacey Black. "The kids loved it and described how loud the sounds of the train whistle were. They were surprised by the sheer size of the locomotive, and one of the students likened it to a 'monster.'

"I was so impressed when one of our first graders was able to describe the 'physics' of the train's wheels and pistons! They really enjoyed seeing the train, and they had a great time."

Union Pacific owns Big Boy No. 4014 as part of its Heritage Fleet, and is sponsoring the train's first-ever coast-to-coast tour this year. It is currently on a tour of the western U.S. and will visit east coast cities later this year as part of the celebration.
