Community Visits New Vaughn Middle School During Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The Washoe County School District held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Vaughn Middle School, one of two brand new schools scheduled to open their doors to students on Monday, August 10. The ceremony featured Native dances by WCSD students, comments by Principal Mandy Lobkowicz and Superintendent Tiffany McMaster, and tours of the three-story building that replaces the 70-year-old former campus.

The new building features a Family Resource Center, collaborative student hubs, media center, 52 teaching stations, state-of-the-art teaching and learning spaces, and a gymnasium. Students at the old Vaughn Middle School, which is located on the same city block as the new school, visited the construction site each week to learn about surveying, architecture, and every aspect of the project as the school was being built over the past two years.

The old school is undergoing demolition during the new school year, after which athletic fields will be built at the site.

Vaughn Middle School was the first school identified in the WCSD Facility Modernization Plan (FMP), adopted by the WCSD Board of Trustees in 2023. This plan guides rebuilds, renovations, maintenance, and construction of schools and district sites.

The other new school opening its doors to students this fall is Stead Elementary School, which held its ribbon cutting ceremony earlier in the week.
