Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! My name is Mark Steinmetz, and I will be providing the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) services for your child this year. This will be my eighth year in the GATE Program, although I have taught in Washoe County for 19 years as an elementary school teacher, in grades 2 through 6th. I am very excited to continue working with the GATE program and have always tried to incorporate some of the various aspects of GATE teaching into my regular classroom, to promote higher-level thinking skills.
By way of describing myself, I have taught the elementary grades 2 through 6 starting first in California, and then moving to Northern Nevada in 1994. After 19 years in the regular ed classroom, I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the GATE program in 2012. I have truly enjoyed my experience working in the program, and I feel that the time devoted to our gifted learners is as important as their regular education curriculum, but with a much shorter time frame.
I have a son who is getting his Master Degree at UNR, and my wife, Moira, who is also a teacher. We love to travel and explore new places. In addition, I have a love of the new, technological advancements made, but also love to show my students the "old school" ideas, many of which came well before our new age of technology. Being able to rely on information both from my background knowledge, and current resources make our activities all the more enjoyable. I look forward to another year of interesting, and challenging projects for our GATE students.
