    MISSION STATEMENT

     

    The mission of the Office of Academics is to provide system-wide leadership for a unified approach to managing instructional programs, initiatives, and academic projects; developing and implementing curricula and instructional resources; and communicating and collaborating within and throughout the educational community of Washoe County, State of Nevada, and the nation in order to prepare all students for highly-skilled and/or career and college readiness. The eight departments within the Office support multiple goals and initiatives within the WCSD Strategic Plan.

    Elementary Curriculum & Instruction

    The mission of the Curriculum and Instruction Department is to provide innovative system-wide leadership, guidance, and support for a unified approach in
    • developing and implementing rigorous, relevant curriculum,
    • creating instructional resources & materials,
    • managing instructional programs, initiatives, and projects,
    • facilitating literacy and community engagement by leading school library and media programs,
    • communicating and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, and
    • developing professional learning that honors teachers and provides content expertise to the District.

    Department of Northwest Regional Professional Development Program (NWRPDP)

    NWRPDP’s mission is to collaborate with stakeholders in our six districts to provide high quality learning opportunities that are aligned with the Nevada Professional Learning Standards and the Nevada Academic Content Standards. Diverse professional learning opportunities and support are based on current empirical research on effective instruction to increase learning for students.

    The mission of the Washoe County School District English Language Learner Department is to ensure rigorous, explicit, high-quality language instruction to pupils who are learners of English, while maintaining and encouraging strong connections to home language and culture.

    Department of Signature Academies/CTE

    The mission of the Department of Signature Academies/CTE is to prepare students for college and/or highly skilled careers, as well as equipping students with technical and life skills necessary for global competitiveness and productive citizenry. The Department helps students develop the ability to contribute positively to the community through exposure to:

    • Signature Academy programs offered in comprehensive high schools
    • Technical pathways that reflect local and national industry demand
    • An integrated curriculum that reflects academic, technical, and 21st Century competency
    • Opportunities to earn industry certifications/college credit/job-specific internships

    Department of Gifted and Talented 

    The mission of the Washoe County School District Gifted and Talented Education Program is to provide gifted and talented students differentiated instruction that is commensurate with their exceptional abilities through a wide spectrum of curricular and instructional gifted services and opportunities. The District will provide programs for gifted and talented students to work together under the guidance of trained teachers in an atmosphere that is intellectually and academically rigorous, fosters creativity, and provides emotional support.
