Whether it’s required for your position or you simply want to be ready in an emergency, our CPR, First Aid, and Bleeding Control courses are designed with you in mind.

Courses

CPR and AED

AHA Heartsaver CPR and AED for adults and children.
Infant CPR is available at no additional cost. Contact us to schedule in advance.

First Aid
Employees: Click here for employee Access, course 366.
Coaches: See class offered through Student Activities and Athletics.

First aid covers emergency care for common injuries and illnesses (different from CPR).
Required for a limited number of positions.
Available over breaks for all current staff.

Basic Life Support (BLS)

Advanced CPR for healthcare providers, like nurses.
If you are required to maintain CPR certification for your district position but also need BLS certification for other roles, such as ski patrol or EMS, please contact us for enrollment details.

Immediate CARE: Bleeding Control
Employees: Click here for Employee Access, course 15079.

One-hour course teaching bystanders how to control life-threatening bleeding with hands-on practice with direct pressure, tourniquets, and wound packing.
Free for all staff.
On-site training can be scheduled through site administrators, school nurse, or Student Health Services.

What to Expect

Physical Participation

Be ready to practice on your hands and knees.
Wear layered, comfortable clothing and tie back long hair. Room temperature can vary.

Course Fees

Fee for CPR or first aid course is $25; payable with cash or check (no cards) during class.
Fee is waived if certification is required for your job or if you volunteer on a medical emergency response team (see FAQ below).

Class Location

Most classes are held at Student Health Services or schools throughout the district.
Employees only. No children or family members can stay at Student Health Services or the surrounding premises.

Attendance and Cancellation

We look forward to seeing you in class. Because it is costly to offer these classes and we work diligently to use funds effectively, we ask for your help and understanding with the following requirements.

Please arrive on time and stay for the full class. Late arrivals must reschedule.
Cancel as soon as possible if you cannot attend — no-shows affect others waiting for a spot.
After two (2) no-shows without cancellation, you must pay for future classes or attend elsewhere.
Classes with fewer than four (4) participants or unsafe weather will be cancelled; you will be notified by email.

Map to Student Health Services

Student Health Services is on the west side of 12th Street between Oddie Blvd and Prater Way in Sparks. The building is a brick house on the west side of 12th Street, immediately south of the Sparks High School baseball fields. Signage is best when approaching from Oddie Blvd.

Parking is available on the west side of the house. Enter using the basement entrance on the north side of the building.

Why are Code Blue teams now called Medical Emergency Medical Response teams?

Why are classes scheduled after school?

If you work in a classroom with students, you may only attend classes outside of school hours. Substitutes cannot be provided and you may not be excused from work to attend these classes. Classes are offered after school, on weekend, and over school breaks. If you have difficulty finding a class time that works for you, please email to ask about alternate class offerings.

Do I have to have CPR for my job?

Some WCSD employees are required to maintain CPR and AED certifications. These positions are listed in administrative regulation 4508 and include the following:

Special Education teachers (including those in Hearing and Visually Impaired programs)
Physical, occupational, and speech therapists
Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants and Speech Pathology Assistants
Physical Education teachers, athletic trainers, and coaches
Teachers who teach CPR as part of the school curriculum
Transportation, Truancy, Re-Engagement, and Campus Supervisor staff
Team Up Coordinators
Infant/Toddler program teachers and aides
School Police
Clinical Aides and Personal Care Providers
Student Health Services nurses
Medical Emergency Response and Triage (Code Blue) team members (as listed by school/department administration)

Special Education aides and assistants are no longer required to maintain CPR and AED certification and will not be paid for time in class, per Administrative Regulation 4508.
