Foster Care

Foster Care Program

Our Mission ...

Our hope is to help provide support for students in foster care through a collaboration between Washoe County School District and Washoe County Human Services Agency.

        • Foster is not the same as Children in Transition (CIT) although they are entitled to similar rights.

We Can Help With ...

  • Immediate enrollment within schools
  • Access to FREE school breakfast and lunch
  • Assistance with school fees
  • Transportation services (out of zone)

Potential Foster Placements ...

  • Foster Family Homes
  • Relative Foster Placements
  • Group Homes and Kids Kottage
  • Residential Treatment Facilities
  • Pre-Adoptive Homes
  • Places at Home (going home does not mean a child's case is closed)

Things to Note ...

  • SCHOOL OF ORIGIN LAW - the school in which a child is enrolled when placed in foster care or the school in which a child who is in foster care is enrolled at the most recent change in placement of the child.

Common Questions ...

  • School placement is determined by a Best Interest Determination Meeting (Child Welfare invites schools and a child's team).
  • Transportation agreements (MOU) between Child Welfare and LEA's
  • Immediate enrollment: a school of origin will be released immediately, and receiving school will request records immediately.
